Some people have a hard time figuring out why a higher education is so important. Many think they can make it by working at the local factory, but times are changing and most of those jobs are disappearing. But, there are other reasons people may not want to seek a higher education. Many people think it’s a waste of money and time. Others have seen people spend years working towards a higher education only to end up flipping burgers. To these people a higher education is very questionable and with good reason. Others may think that they have the perfect job and that there’s no need to seek higher education, while others feel that they’re too old to seek a higher education. The excuses are numerous, but there are several good reasons why you should choose to seek a higher education.
More Money: So you think you have the perfect job? After all, you’re making pretty good money for the area you’re living in. You’ve been working at your local factory for five years and are now making around $10 an hour. But, have you been watching the news lately? Manufacturers know they can get their products made for mere pennies in foreign countries. It’s only a matter of time before the factory you’re working for catches on and then what? Without a higher education, you may find yourself flipping burgers down at the local fast food place or you may find yourself unemployed. Even if your job is secure, you could be making more than $10 an hour, if you got a higher education. Depending on the degree you choose, you could see your salary jump $20,000 to $40,000. That ten dollars an hour doesn’t sound so great now, does it?
High School Diplomas: At one time, having a high school diploma meant you had a higher education, but not anymore. There are several places that will not hire you unless you have an associate’s degree. What does mean to you? Well, if you’ve been working in a factory for the past 20 years, you may need to go to college in order to find another job. There are some companies that don’t even care what your degree is in; they just want you to have a higher education. To a company, a degree means that you cared enough to work hard and make it through college. To them, it means you will also work hard at their company. If you want a good job, you need more than a high school diploma.
Career Change: Do you really want to stay at the same job forever? Let’s say you have gone to college, but now you’re tired of your dead end job. This is a wonderful reason to seek a higher education a second time. There are even colleges that will consider the work you did at your current job as experience and will let you use that as part of your credit hours. You may be thinking that you don’t have time to seek a higher education and work full-time, but there are several colleges and universities that now offer online classes, allowing you to work on these classes when you have time.
Promotion: Okay, so you want to stay at your current job. That’s fine, but do you want to stay in the same position? Most people want to move up in the world and a higher education will get you noticed when a position opens up. If you take the time to seek a higher education, while you’re working for a company, they will take notice of this. Plus, most companies offer a tuition reimbursement plan.
Better Yourself: You may, indeed, have the perfect job, but wouldn’t you like to say that you have a higher education. Wouldn’t it feel good to finally have a degree hanging on your wall? Or wouldn’t it feel good to learn something new? A higher education doesn’t have to be all about money and promotions; a higher education can also be a way to learn something you’ve always wanted to learn. You may love to cook and want to learn more about it. In that case, a degree in culinary arts would be perfect for you.
Regardless of why you choose a higher education, remember that it is worth your time, effort, and money. A higher education can take you a lot further than a high school diploma and you’ll feel better about yourself, knowing that you worked hard to get that degree.
