In today’s information age, we are inundated with negative news. It is rare to see something on the television news that talks about a good event; it happens, but it is rare. Instead, we see images of war-torn countries, soldiers fighting, congress fighting, political corruption, arrests, wrecks, murder and the like.
These things are definitely newsworthy, most of them, and surely people should be informed of what takes place in the world in which they live, but the negative bent of the news is often demoralizing.
Yesterday, I was driving down the street listening to the radio when an old song I hadn’t heard in years started to play Anne Murray’s, A Little Good News. One line in the song goes like this: “How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair, how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care…”
I too would like to hear some good news every now and then, or at least something that makes me laugh instead of become angry or want to cry, and I find that I don’t always want to have to sit through or wade through all the negative news in order to find it.
This is True
That’s when I remembered my favorite ezine newsletter – This is True, by Randy Cassingham. (http://www.thisistrue.com) I highly recommend this site and the newsletter.
This is True is a great site for news, but with a twist. The news Mr. Cassingham reports on This is True are the actual stories and headlines found in the newspapers across the country, but with additional commentary and humor interspersed. Reading This is True will make you question the sanity of your fellow man, laugh out loud, or sigh in utter amazement at the stupidity of some criminals.
The basic newsletter is free, but you can sign up for the premium newsletter for a small fee and receive a lot of extras, including more stories. I think what makes this newsletter so popular is the fact that, as its title suggests, these are actually true stories that are funnier than fiction could ever provide.
News of the Weird
News of the Weird boasts itself to be “the weekly syndicated newspaper column (founded 1988) that is the most widely-read bizarre-news feature in the United States…” (http://www.newsoftheweird.com/)
Even though News of the Weird is a syndicated newspaper column, you can visit the website for archived copies of some of the most bizarre, humorous, or downright ridiculous news stories that are good for a laugh or to make you scratch your head in confusion or utter amazement.
While I would not necessarily call Dave Barry’s columns news, I find him one of the best humor writers of our time and almost always enjoy a chuckle at his writings. Dave Barry has a Classic Dave Barry column, which can be find at the Miami Herald website, as well as his own website.
If you want a good laugh, be sure to check out Mr. Barry’s sites and read what his commentary on the world around us.
Good News Network
This website, found at http://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/, offers some alternatives to bad news, by providing just what its name suggests: Good News!
This website offers just what its name suggests: everything bizarre! From pictures to news to headlines to products – if it’s bizarre, you’ll probably find it on this website at http://www.bizarrenews.com/
The Daily Hog
This site I found to be a bit hard to navigate, and while the new stories shown here aren’t as humorous in nature of the others I’ve listed in this article, you can find some pretty strange, interesting, or just plain confusing news stories on this site.
True Stella Awards
While this newsletter and website aren’t exactly about news, if you want a good laugh or a sad chuckle, these outrageous lawsuits are sure to please. You will shake your head in disbelief at some of the outrageous lawsuits that are clogging up our court systems, but even more than that, you will be dumbfounded by some of the court’s decisions too.
This site is also run by Randy Cassingham, and is a sister site to the This is True newsletter and website.
There are plenty of other good news, weird news, and outrageous news websites out there today. All you have to do is search for “Weird News” or “Good News” and you will receive a list of many sites, but I believe these listed here are some of the best available if you want to take a break from the negative news.
