The family of 90 year old Alzheimer’s patient Sigmund Bock, was shocked to find out that Bock had been taken to a local Emergency Room after having been found with a dead rat in his mouth. The elderly Bock lived at Paragon Gardens Assisted Living and Memory Care Community. The ex-lawyer and World War 11 Veteran had been seen by a staff member, playing with a rat in his room while eating candy, on the morning of the 18th of March. Records were obtained from Paragon Gardens testifying to the incident.
The Attorney obtained to represent Bock, claims Paragon Gardens had become short-staffed after overbooking the facility while trying to receive Corporate bonuses and trying to cut costs and raise profits. The Attorney says that the needs of the residents were ignored.
Spokeswoman Melody Chatelle, who works for SunWest Management Inc. of Portand, Oregon who owns Paragon Gardens, denies the incident. Chatelle claims,”We take care of our residents and find this negative publicity to be a disheartening affront to our professional care-givers and especially to our residents and their loved ones.”
Ms. Chatelle has said that Mr. Bock had been seen holding one of the glue traps that had been placed in his room by a pest control company to trap a single field mouse. Paramedics had been called to the facility and reported that Mr. Bock was suspected of possibly ingesting a toxic substance. Emergency Room files show that Bock had been found with the rat dead in his mouth.
Mr. Bock’s lawyer has said that, ‘Bock had two traps located in his room and that the traps held a type of poison and not glue.’ On Paragon Garden’s web-site they are quoted as having the following mission statement. ” Out goal is to provide the highest quality of life for each of our residents. Paragon Gardens is dedicated to our life engagement philosophy of social, psychological, spiritual and physical well being of every individual in our care.” Their basic services are listed as offering 3 delicious meals a day. There is 24 hour specially trained on site-staff available. They offer engaging activities along with various other extras.
This is only the latest of many past allegations for the care-facility. The department of Social Services claims at least six clients had been injured from improper care. SunWest Management Inc. has appealed the charges. Last year the State of California tried to revoke the care facility’s license, after a 71 year old Dementia patient had wandered away from Paragon. No trace of the patient was ever found. The State is currently investigating the most current incident with Mr. Bock. They had received an anonymous call on the 23 of March.
More than 4.5 million Americans suffer from the affects of Alzheimers disease. Most afflicted are over the age of 65. Chances of a person of 65 or over of developing the disease is one in ten. After the age of 85 the rate of affliction will become 50%. If there is no cure developed for Alzheimers, by the year 2050 there will be more than 14 million Alzheimers patients in the United States.
Sigmund Bock is being treated for trauma in an undisclosed, local, psychiatric facility. His family claims that Bock has not been the same since the incident.
