The year is 2007, we are almost through with the train wreck that has been the Bush presidency. Mr. Bush has the unique distinction of being described by many as the worst president in the history of these United States. It seems like the entire country is holding its collective breath, waiting until January 2009. Well, most of the country. I, for one, cannot fathom how this Administration still manages to hold on to the minimal support that it has. That’s the motivation for the American Idiot Award this time around.
And the winners are – those who still carry the water for this failed presidency. Granted, that’s alot of people to give an award to, in spite of the facts that slap us in the face. A president out of touch with the people. And more than that, who willfully chooses to be out of touch. Bush is to the point where he doesn’t give a damn about what the public wants. It’s one thing to have your own mind, it is quite another to lose it.
What might be a good way to describe the Bush years? One failure after another. The man has a way of “out failing” himself. Run down the list. Iraq. Katrina. Abu Gharib. Donald Rumsfeld. Alberto Gonzales. Dealing with Iran and North Korea. Alienating most of the world. Tax cuts to the rich while running huge budget deficits and prosecuting expensive military adventures. Corruption scandals. Failing to give proper attention to Afghanistan so he could focus on Iraq. Give-aways to big oil. Filling critical positions with non-qualified cronies. On and on….
Still, he is holding on to about a 30% approval rating. It seems that some are determined to ride the dead horse that is this presidency right into the ground. I think part of it has to do with the fact that he has actually been able to get much of the neo-con agenda put in place. The failings of the Bush presidency are also a failing of the neo-con agenda. And nobody likes to see their agenda discredited! Of course, the failure of the agenda is compounded by the abject ineptitude of the man himself. What we have is an incompetent leader pushing a failed agenda.
The supporters who still are behind Mr. Bush are adamant in their denial of the shortcomings. It seems like whatever the scandal, they rise to his defense with very few defections. If you only were to get your information from Fox News, you might think that the he is doing a good job. You might think that the crazy liberal media is after him for no reason except that they don’t like him.
But to truly be classified as “American Idiots” takes more than just being ignorant. To join the ranks of Ann Coulter, Todd Friel, and Billo requires that a person go above and beyond in their illogical pursuit of that which makes no sense at all. We have reached that point with those who still regard this presidency as anything but a breakdown. Some may think it is a bit presumptuous to include almost 30% of the public in this category. I argue that the preponderance of evidence points to a complete failure. To continue in denial isn’t healthy for anyone. So it is the “loyal Bushies” who win this time.
The problem with the minority of people who still support the failed neo-con agenda is that almost all of them vote. So a small part of this award has to go to those who don’t. When people don’t vote, they make it possible for a minority to govern. If more than 90% of 30% votes and turnout is only around 50%, guess who wins.
But fear not, American Idiots! There is still hope, all is not lost. There are Republicans who are hopping off the short bus that is the Bush presidency. We will not turn you away from the halls of logic. Stop voting against your own self interest and for the interests of the super rich. Stop supporting the desire to remain in Iraq forever. Fight for the power of the people, not the corporations. And we can talk about our differences.
