American Kennel Club’s Most Popular Breeds in Major Eastern Cities

The American Kennel Club has released their 2006 statistics of dog breed registration. The statistic show which breeds are registered, giving a picture of popularity and trends. They have compiled a list of top 10 dogs by breed. They have also compiled the statistics in areas. Following are the top 10 dog breeds nationally.

There are separate lists of top 10 breeds for the largest cities in the Northeast and Southeast. Compare the national list to the city list to find interesting differences. There is some commentary for each city describing key differences in the statistics.

Ten most popular breeds in the US

Atlanta, Georgia
The nationwide trend is toward smaller dogs, but Atlanta’s top spots are taken by big dogs. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have been increasing in popularity over the past few years.

Buffalo, New York
The Rottweiler is number 6 in Boston, while it ranks 17th nationwide. It’s popularity has risen since last year when it was number 10. The Yorkshire Terrier is not one of Buffalo’s top 10. The Beagle is also not on the Buffalo list, while it ranks 5 nationally. The Chihuahua and Pug are in Buffalo’s top 10, bu rank 11th and 13th nationally.

The small breeds are well represented on the Rhode Island top 10. The Pug, Dachshund and Maltese are higher then the national favorites.

The Shetland Sheepdog, which is on only 4 top 10 lists,is the only top 10 breed that is not a top 10 breed in the nation.

Tampa’s top 10 list has remained consistent for the past few years. The Rottweiler has replaced the Bulldog in the top 10. The Chihuahua has made the top 10. The Beagle, which is number 5 on the national list, is not on the Tampa top 10.
