Are Residential Wind Turbines Financially Responsible?

by sumo nova

Wind Turbine is a glorified word for wind mill. Wind mills were used on farms many, many years ago. However, with the invention of a more convenient type of electricity, wind power was temporarily forgotten. Now global warming is rearing it’s ugly head and the world is now beginning to worry about what will happen within the next 100 years. What will happen to our children’s children? In the United States, most electricity is produced from burning coal. This pollutes the air and causes global warming. It is our job to find alternate sources of electricity. Wind generators are one solution to the problem. Although wind power does not make sense in areas without much wind, other windy areas would work perfectly. Now the only question becomes money. Is it currently financially responsible to install a wind turbine?

Typically, the initial investment of a wind turbine can vary quite a bit. They can cost anywhere from $6000-$22000. This includes installation and sometimes a service agreement from the manufacturer. There are many different sizes of wind turbines that put out different amounts of electricity. The larger the turbine, the initial investment and energy production typically increase.

Many people have already quit reading this article. There are a lot of families all over the country who cannot afford $6000 out of their pocket for an initial investment. For the rest of you: please read on.

The amount of money you can save with a wind turbine per month varies as well. However, a small wind turbine can save your household 50% in energy costs. Larger turbines can save up to 90% in electricity costs. There are many factors to consider with this equation. Homes that use a lot of air conditioning will save less because they use more electricity. Also, homes that are in less windy areas will not generate as much power with their wind turbines. These factors can effect savings greatly.

Using wind turbines as a longterm investment can be a great idea. The amount of money you will save on your energy costs will pay for the initial wind turbine investment in about 10 years. After 10 years, all the money you save is cash in your own pocket! Some smart middle aged folks have invested in wind turbines knowing that once they hit retirement, the initial investment will be paid for and they will save greatly on electricity expenses.

Another way a wind turbine is a great investment is through soaring real estate costs. A wind turbine adds much value to your house. Most people would like to be environmentally friendly while saving a bit of money. Buying house with a wind turbine already installed gives people that opportunity in the easiest way possible. Wind turbines definitely appreciate in value with your house over time.

Although the initial investment of a wind turbine can sting quite a bit, it is the big picture that counts. Over time, a wind turbine will pay for itself and much more. Sometimes a little extra money to save the world is worth a try.
