Before we begin, I must admit that the person I interviewed may not be what you think of as your typical up-and-coming musician. He is however, a musician. A 6 year old, armpit playing musician to be exact. Ok, so he doesn’t play Beethoven or Mozart with his instrument, but he entertains all of his friends with the “music” he plays. I have to admit that he has gotten more than one chuckle from me too.
I agreed to interview Dalton after he begged me to. I did interview his sister after all, so it was only fair that I question him. So, it began in my computer room. Dalton ran right in the room ready to start. He plopped down in a chair across from me and told me he was ready to go.
Kay Adams: What instrument do you play?
Dalton: I play my armpit as an instrument with a straw.
K: How long have you played?
D: I played like, once a day, or no day, or maybe no day, or maybe a day.
K: But, how long have you known how to play?
D: Since my Sissy taught me how. She told me to stick the mouth part of the straw in my mouth, and the long part in my armpit (then blow), and it makes a cool and funny fart and sometimes I pretend it’s a motorcycle.
K: Do you play any particular songs?
D: No, not very much.
K: What is your favorite song?
D: My favorite song is Young Prince of the South, and Get on the Floor (Party Starter).
K: Who is your favorite artist?
D: That’s kind of hard (pauses and looks around the room), it’d be like you, because of your paintings.
K: What about your favorite musical artist?
D: I don’t know, like Will Smith, or Young Prince of the South.
K: What do you want to be when you grow up?
D: A motorcycle racer.
K: What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not playing your armpit?
D: Uh, um, play Power Rangers.
D: Are we done?
K: Not yet. I thought you wanted to do this.
D: I did, but are we almost done?
K: Just a couple more questions buddy.
K: If you could be any color, what would you be?
D: Dark Blue.
D: Because it’s my favorite color.
K: Do you like to be inside or outside more?
D: Think, think in my brain…..out and in.
K: Why outside?
D: Outside, because we play on the trampoline.
K: Why inside?
D: Inside, because we could play with Power Rangers.
K: If you had 1 million dollars, what would you do?
D: If I didn’t already have one, I would buy a motorcycle and race, and buy a new house. Am I really close to being done? (he asks as he’s heading out the door)
K: Really close. (he comes back in the room and stands)
K: Do you like playing your armpit? (he starts heading out the door as he answers)
K: Do you think playing the armpit makes the world a better place?
D: (with a big grin on his face) huh-uh.
The interview obviously ended there. No great insight into the amazing world of armpit playing, no teary confession about having a hard life. No revelation about armpit playing making the world a better place. I guess you can’t expect too much from a 6 year old. I did think he would be a little more interested, seeings how he begged me to interview him. But then again, a year ago he begged me for the guitar that he has shoved underneath his bed.
