In a society where air-brushed actresses and hotel heiresses star in almost every newscast and magazine, it is extremely difficult as a woman to not compare yourself to the unattainable perfection of these so-called “role models”.
I, myself, have times where I wish I had Heidi Klum’s perfect thighs or Angelina Jolie’s sexpot lips. But then I really get to thinking about it… would I really want to sacrifice time with my family for hours upon hours a day in the gym? Not hardly. Believe it or not, I am comfortable with who I am, and more so who I am not.
Here are a few simple ways to boost your body image the next time the “media monsters” have you doubting being fabulous you.
– Remember that there will always be things about you that you cannot change… your shoe size, height, and the fact you inherited your mother’s ample (or not so ample) chest. It is these things about you that make you unique, so cherish them!
– Always keep in mind the things you can change. If you are looking to lose a few pounds, then commit yourself to eating right and exercising. If you wish you had a different hairstyle or wardrobe, then go out and attain those things. A mini-makeover is a perfect project than almost anyone can do in a Saturday. (I indulge in these every few weeks, gathering a group of my closest gal pals. An amazing esteem booster!)
– Realize and believe the only person who has to be happy with you, is you! This is probably the easiest way to boost your self image. The moment you quit caring about what those around you are thinking is the moment you achieve true self-esteem freedom! Not only will you carry yourself differently, you will stop obsessing about all the little things that have been holding you back.
– Take pleasure in the little things about yourself, no matter what. I was in a writing conference a few months ago where our instructor had everyone in the room write down ten things they liked about themselves, and then read the list aloud. By the end of the exercise, we all felt as though we’d had a huge ego boost – and it all came from ourselves! While you don’t have to specifically write down everything, giving yourself frequent compliments and treats can be a perfect way to boost your body image. For an added benefit, make a point to replace every negative comment you find yourself thinking about your body with three positive. A perfect way to banish those bad thoughts forever!
Keep these tips on hand next time you start to feel negative, and you’ll be amazed how lifted you will feel in no time.
