Whenever the baseball season comes to a close and people are debating who should be the MVP it seems like the entire argument is about home runs, batting average, RBI and that sort of thing. This might suggest to people that hitting is all you need to worry about, but it’s not. A very big part of winning baseball games is base running. Here are some base running tips.
The first thing you should know about base running is that anybody can be a good base runner. Sure players that are faster and know how to run bases are going to run the bases great but a base runner that is smart can often be more successful than a faster player that isn’t a good base runner.
Every base runner must always know how many outs there are and what the score is. That might seem pretty simple but it’s always easy to lose your concentration out there.
Always know how many outs there are so that you know whether to run on the next play or not. If there are two outs and the ball is hit in the air then you can go ahead and start running. Even if the outfielder catches the ball it won’t matter because the inning is over. But if the ball is hit in the air with just one out and you start running then the outfielder can double you up.
Always remember the score too because you might want to be more careful in certain situations. If your team is losing 4 – 3 and you’re on second and the tying run then you want to be careful. If your team is up 10 – 3 it’s not a big deal if you get thrown out running the bases.
As soon as you make contact get out of the box quickly and run as hard as you can. Getting out of the batter’s box quickly will help in case there is a close play at first base. Always run as hard as you can too because you never know when a fielder will make an error and you’ll end up on base. Getting out of the box early and running hard will also force the fielder to make a quicker play which could help lead to them making an error.
While you are hustling to first base look for the ball and see where it is. It is important to know where the ball is so that you know whether to stop at first base or round first and head to second base.
When running to first, if you see the play is going to be at first base then run through the base. When running to first base you don’t have to stay on the base like you do for the other bases. Just run as hard as you can right through the bag and then stop after you’ve passed first base.
If you hit the ball out of the infield you’re going to want to round first base. That means you’re going to turn at first base and head to second base. You might not go all the way to second base but at least start in that direction. Again you never know when a fielder will make an error and if you’re already headed for second you can easily continue to second base on an error.
If you follow these tips it should help you to get on base and you should become a better base runner and a better all around offensive player. If your entire team learns how to run the bases well then you should have a high scoring offense.
