The best part of this fun handmade beach wedding favor gift is that one size fits all! Making hand made soap is very easy. Even if you have never made soap before, you should be able to easily complete this simple Sand Dollar project in less than 2 hours. You should expect to pay about $15 – $20 for materials, but you can get a lot of small Sand Dollar soaps out of one batch.
Bridesmaids and grooms can help with this simple Sand Dollar soap craft, but they will need supervision because you will be working with hot materials.
To make some Sand Dollar soaps You Will Need:
Sand Dollars (1 – 4)
Round cookie cutters (the same size as your sand dollars)
1 lb Block of Heat and Pour Soap
Essential Oils (optional)
1 microwave safe measuring cup or bowl
1lb blocks heat and pour soap is available at craft supply stores in glycerin or coconut base. It is a simple product to work with a very affordable.
Essential Oil, which is optional, is also available at almost any craft or art supplier store. Essential oils are great if you want to add a tropical fragrance to the soap like coconut, vanilla, melon, eucalyptus, or even cinnamon.
Now, the first step is to roll out clay on a piece of wax paper. You want to set in your rounded cookie cutter into the clay but do not cut all the way through.
Now, take your sand dollar and drop it into the cookie cutter. Face down. You want to press the sand dollar into the clay. You are trying to capture the detail on the surface of the sand dollar in the surface of the clay.
I recommend pressing down until the back of the sand dollar is flush with the clay.
Now, remove the sand dollar.
Now, Cut your one-pound soap block into 1″ squares. Next, place it into a microwave safe cup. You want to melt it for 15 seconds on high. If soap is not completely melted microwave in 5-second increments until fully melted. It is important to not overheat your soap block material.
Now, Allow soap to sit for a minute until a skin forms on top. Next you should push away the skin mix in a few drops of fragrance oil if you want to.
Now for the fun, pour soap into the Sand Dollar cookie cutter mold in the clay. You can use air-drying clay or regular old clay, it does not matter. You might be able to use leftover play dough if the kids have any. You are basically trying to create a shape that the candle soap material can dry in and don’t leak out of.
The Sand Dollar soaps will need to sit for at least 2 hours to dry and cure. I recommend letting them sit for at least 3 to 5 hours if you have the time.
Tip: Before removing the cookie cutter put into the freezer for 10 minutes to make removing the cookie cutter easier.
You need to Remove the clay from around the round cookie cutter and press the soap out from the cookie cutter mold.
Slice the clay off with a knife. You can also use a paring knife to trim any rough edges.
While the melted soap is still liquid you can add fun ingredients. Herb leaves and rose petals are great additions. Sand in this case would make a nice exfoliating soap.
You can package your beach wedding favor sand dollar soaps in individual small white gift boxes. I find them all the time at arts and crafts store and even the container Store. Lay some shredded colorful paper into the bottom of the gift box. Fill it with a layer of your handmade Sand Dollar soaps. Tie it shut with a beautiful ribbon that matches your beach wedding colors and you have a wonderful handmade wedding favor gift.
This simple gift is also great for a hostess gift for any parties you will be attending during the warm spring and summer seasons. It is also a very simple gift that one of your children’s teaches would really appreciate.
