The legendary Elvis Presley had a hit song with the lyrics “You ain’t nothing but a hound dog, crying all night. You ain’t nothing but a hound dog, crying all night. Well, you ain’t never caught a rabbit and you ain’t no friend of mine.”. Honestly, these lyrics have never made a lot of sense to me. Recently, someone in my suburban neighborhood got a hound dog, who occasionally howls long mournful howls. While I have no reason to believe that the hound dog is not being fed, sheltered, and cared for, when I hear the howl I wonder what the poor dog needs. Now, some of the lyrics to the popular Elvis tune make sense, but I still don’t understand about the rabbit.
Dogs have a well deserved reputation as man’s best friend. As with any friend, what they want most of all is to be with you and enjoy your company. There are even studies that show that pets contribute to good health and longevity. People’s blood pressure can be lowered by stroking their pet. In fact there are many health benefits to owning a pet, including: improving blood pressure, improving mood, stress management, social support in helping to meet people, and staving off loneliness. A healthy holiday gift is a reward for your canine companion.
Dogs don’t really ask a lot of you, but you can make their lives happier, healthier and more comfortable by making them feel like family by including your pet in your holidays. Your hound dog will reward you many times over with happy companionship and the many health and emotional benefits of pet ownership. A holiday gift for your dog makes your dog feel like a treasured family member.
I have had dachshunds (popularly known as Weiner dogs) for several years. Dachshunds are considered to be part of the hound class of dogs, hence the title of this article. However, any dog, be it terrier, poodle, toy, or working class dog will love holiday gifts that make them feel like a family member. The best holiday gift I ever got my pet dachshunds was a soft dog bed. At the time I had two dogs who weighed about twelve pounds each. We wrapped the gift bed in colorful holiday paper. The dogs excitedly watched us open our gifts and waited in anticipation for theirs. I presented my precious dachshunds with the large package and helped them out by starting to tear the holiday gift paper open. Once they got the hang of it, they stuck their noses into the gift package and when the paper was only half ripped off, they both jumped in. They instinctively knew what it was and how to use it. Of course, they looked adorable sitting next to each other in their soft pink dog bed.
Once your dog gets used to sharing your holidays, be sure to give them a gift for every holiday. Dogs don’t really differentiate between Christmas or someone’s birthday. If you forget to give them a gift when their people are opening presents, they can be heartbreakingly disappointed. The good thing is that the gifts don’t have to be fancy or expensive. Some healthful dog treats wrapped in paper are enough to make them feel like they got a present and are part of the family.
Luckily, a healthy holiday gift for man’s, or woman’s, best friend is easy to find for these easily pleased and heartwarming creatures.
A WARM AND SECURE FEELING BED MAKES YOUR DOG FEEL SAFE AND WARM
Just like people, dogs like to have their own beds. A soft warm bed is a safe place where they may curl up and sleep and possibly keep their treasures. Dogs instinctively like to be surrounded, as if in a cave, in order to feel safe and hidden from predators. A oval shaped bed, which is just big enough to hold your dog will help to keep them warm, safe and content during and after the holidays.

Does your pet dog ever get uncomfortable with it’s collar or harness? Dachshund Delights has a comfortable mesh harness secured with Velcro that fits and looks like a vest. Dachshund Delights also carries a seatbelt attachment, called Smiling Dog Enterprises Doggier Catcher, that connects to the harness and your car seatbelt, to secure your dog safely while riding. The harness and doggie catcher are practical, useful holiday gifts for your dog, who will enjoy traveling with you in good health and safety.
DOG SWEATERS AND COATS KEEP OFF WINTER CHILL
Sweaters and coats will help to keep the chill off of your dog when it has to go outside on cold winter days. Petsmart at www.petsmart.com and Petco at www.petco.com both carry a large selection of dog clothing in a variety of colors and styles. Petsmart and Petco are large pet supply retailers that have retail stores, as well as the convenience of on line ordering available.
DOG TOYS AND TREATS
If your companion dog enjoys playing with toys, the holidays are an excellent time to purchase them as a gift. Stockings are available at most department, grocery, and pet stores. With a selection of 4 to 5 squeaky toys in one stocking, your dog will enjoy hours of healthy entertainment.
There are many excellent brands of dog treats on the market. Top professional brands that can be purchased at your vets or at most pet retailers are Iams, Science Diet, and Purina. If your vet has suggested a special brand or type, for health reasons, that is the brand to stick with. Healthy treats can improve tooth health and assist with weight control. Healthy treats can become dog gifts simply by wrapping them in holiday gift paper.
The Kong Company, at www.kongcompany.com has an exciting combination of dog treat and toy. The Kong products have a healthy treat, or liver flavored paste inside a hard rubber toy. While your dog chews the toy to get the treat out, it cleans teeth and massages gums. Kong can be found at pet retail stores.
Share the holiday spirit with your canine companion. Your dog will reward you with bright adoring eyes and a happily wagging tail. Even Elvis’s hound dog might stop howling.
