This simple clay bead party craft is great for a group for kids because your clay will a really long way. The kids will spend so much time at the birthday party making the hand made beads that they won’t realize they are not using a ton of clay.
You can tons of homemade beads in less than 2 hours. Be sure to allot for drying time for the clay. So, if you are doing this at a slumber birthday party then have the kids start making the beads out of the air drying clay the night before. They can dry overnight and the kids can put their necklaces together after breakfast or paint them or even package them to take home.
Now, to throw this unique make your own bead birthday party you will need:
Air Drying Clay
Wooden or Metal Skewers
Pastel Acrylic Paints
Clear Acrylic Spray Paint
(1 Tupperware per girl)
Now, the first thing your need to do is find your air-drying clay. I buy this at Dick Blick art supply store. I have also seen it at Pearl Paints. You may be able to find it at Michaels in smaller containers. Look for air-drying clay in white to get truly crisp pastel colors. You could also prime the dried beads in white Kilz primer to help with the color.
Generally a large 5 lb. block of air drying clay will cost about $5. You can make a large number of necklaces with one block.
One 5 lbs block should be enough for 5 girls.
Ok, so if you are hosting this bead making birthday party group of kids I recommend going ahead and slicing if a slab of clay for each child. They can keep it wrapped in plastic wrap near them so they don’t have to reach for more.
Have each child break off small pieces of clay. They should roll the clay in their hands to make a small ball. Now, press the ball out into any shape.
These clay hand made beads can be made to almost any size. I recommend about ¼ inch to ½ inch circles for the best beads. The kids can also roll out coils and cut out tube shaped beads.
Now, use your wooden skewer to make the hole through the center of the hand made bead. You may need to help smaller children with this step of the birthday party craft project. If they made a shape out of the clay, like a heart, help them to press a hole through the shape starting on one side and coming out the other.
Continue this hole making process until all of the beads are ready.
Now, the kids can also crave designs into their air-drying clay beads . Names, letters, school initials, and even polka dots are all great.
Now, lay the beads out on a flay surface until the clay is completely dry.
If you want to paint the hand made beads this would be the time to do it. You can spray the beads all one color or paint each one individually.
Have each girl keep her beads in her own Tupperware to take home. I am sure this unique birthday party idea will be a huge hit with girls and it will not cost you a fortune.
