The game producer is the one who manages of the overall development of a video game or computer game. This title was created by Tripp Hawkins in 1982 when he started Electronic Arts. The game producers job means different things to many different people.
Internal Producers- work for the developer and are a hands-on group
External Producers-were hired by the game publisher and basically manages several projects, by many developers. They keep top management informed of progress and problems. They either work on a single game, or several small games.
Line Producers-Schedule projects and costs, they make sure titles are done on time and within budget.
The internal producer usually works on just one game, what they do varies but. basically they do the same thing.
Negotiate contracts and licensing deals
Works with the publisher or executives
Oversees the art, design, and technical aspects of the game project
Makes sure everything is done on time
The Scheduling of quality assurance testing, Beta testing, and focus groups if needed
Creating a small game, the producer most likely will work with the creative staff and programmers. Larger games require that the producer get help from the lead artist, programmer, tester and the game designer. Even though he meets with the entire development team every so often, he meets with the leads regularly.
Even though the producer is not a game designer, they still have a large part in the designing of the game. The game designer and producer basically work together. The producer is only the boss of the game itself, not the developers. The producer can issue warnings and the like, but cannot promote or fire anyone on the team.
With three years experience, a producers average salary is $62,000. Six years experience can bring $80,000 per year.
Executive Producers make $50,000. After six years, $82,000 per year. Executive producers with six years experience make six figure salaries. $200,000 is the highest to date.
Unless you’re an aggressive do-it-yourself kind of person, you would most likely need to be formally trained in order to be a video game producer. There are game degrees at UAT, The University Of Advancing Technology. If that’s too much for you, you can always read a book. Amazon has a great book available, The Game Producers Handbook by Dan Irish. The reviews are very good.
