If the rest for America is anything like me they spending a lot of time in front of the TV nibbling away on snacks. With the huge design craze to turn your ottoman into a coffee table, you need an awesome serving tray to help hold drinks and food.

Looking for a great hand made gift for a hostess gift too? Try making this Clay Ottoman Serving Tray and your hostess will love you!

You can make this Clay Ottoman Serving Tray craft for less than $20, probably around $10 depending on what craft materials you already have. This is a fun project for kids as well as adults.

To Make a Clay Ottoman Serving Tray you will need:

Air Drying Clay (Like Active Clay)

Clay working tools (Or a tooth pick, pencil, paring knife…)

Acrylic Paints (Optional)

Clear Acrylic Spray Paint (Not Optional)

Embellishments, like beads, glass stones…(Optional)

Rolling pin

The first step is to cut off a piece of your air-drying clay. Roll it out to about1.2 inch thick. You can make this Clay Ottoman Serving Tray as big or small as your ottoman to customize it. I think about 20 inches wide and about 34 inches tall for each letter is a very nice sized Clay Ottoman Serving Tray.

Now, use a toothpick to trace out your Clay Ottoman Serving Tray shape. The good thing about clay is that you can draw your shape and if you do not like it, simply smooth it over with your finger. Once you have your outline made, use a paring knife to cut it out. Remove any of the excess clay and use it for the next step.

Now, Break off some pieces of clay and roll them out into coils. They work best at about ΒΌ inch thick, but you can play around with that measurement. Use these coils to build handles for the Clay Ottoman Serving Tray. You can make them as small or large as you want.

You can attach them by scratching X shapes in the ends of the coils, putting a little water on them and working them in other clay platter.

This is also an important step to keep the Clay Ottoman Serving Tray sturdy and one piece.

You can also cut out fun designs form clay.

You can use a paintbrush or your finger to put water on the bottom of the cut outs and then lay them on top. Use you finger to smooth the clay into each other to make a finished Clay Ottoman Serving Tray.

Now, you can leave your entire Clay Ottoman Serving Tray smooth or add embellishments or even carve in details with your clay working tools. I like to carve in polka dots using the toothpick. Next I randomly outline small circular shape. Once you have finished embellishing your clay, let it sit out and dry completely.

Now, you can either paint your Clay Ottoman Serving Tray or simply leave eat the color of the clay. No matter what you do you need to spray it with a coat of clear acrylic spray paint once it is dry.

Tip: You will not be able to ever wash the Clay Ottoman Serving Tray if you don’t add this coat of clear paint. It would also not be very safe to put food on.

If you are going to paint it with acrylic paints your can paint them directly onto the dry clay. Allow your acrylic paints to dry, and then spray on your clear coat.
