This sand dollar shaped plate charger is the perfect addition to your wedding reception dinner tables. You can carry on an elegant beach theme at your wedding and create some keepsakes you will have forever!
You can even give these Sand Dollar Plate Chargers as a beach wedding favor gift! You can make this Sand Dollar Plate Charger for less than $5 depending on what craft materials you already have.
To Make A Sand Dollar Plate Charger you will need:
Air Drying Clay (Like Active Clay)
Clay working tools (Or a tooth pick, pencil, paring knife…)
White, cream, and sand colored Acrylic Paints (Optional)
Clear Acrylic Spray Paint (Not Optional)
Embellishments, like beads, glass stones…(Optional)
The first step is to cut off a piece of your air-drying clay. Roll it out to about ¼ inch thick. You can make this Sand Dollar Plate Charger as big or small as you want. I think about 14 inches wide and about 14 inches tall is a very nice sized Sand Dollar Plate Charger.
Now, use a toothpick to trace out your sized Sand Dollar shape. The good thing about clay is that you can draw your sand dollar shape and if you do not like it, simply smooth it over with your finger. Once you have your Sand Dollar outline made, use a paring knife to cut the bunny out. Remove any of the excess clay and use it for the next step.
Tip: Try drawing your sand dollar out on paper. Once you have the design right, cut it out with scissors. You can trace this outline on the clay with a toothpick.
Now, you can leave your entire Sand Dollar Plate Charger smooth or add embellishments or even carve in details with your clay working tools. I like to carve in the small star like cut outs found in the middle of sand dollars. Next I like to outline any details. Play around with making dots or stippling with the ends of a toothpick. No sand dollar found in nature is perfect, so add some imperfections!
Once you have finished embellishing your clay, let it sit out and dry completely.
Now, you can either paint your Sand Dollar Plate Charger or simply leave eat the color of the clay. No matter what you do you need to spray it with a coat of clear acrylic spray paint once it is dry. You will not be able to ever wash the platter if you don’t add this coat of clear paint. It would also not be very safe to put food on.
If you are going to paint it with acrylic paints your can paint them directly onto the dry clay. Allow your acrylic paints to dry, and then spray on your clear coat.
This Sand Dollar Plate Charger looks great if you paint it in pastel colors. You can also sponge on colors as well!
Get creative with the paint treatment. You can paint the plate charger white first, then add some cream, and then sponge on some sand color! Try adding some real sand to your paint to create some natural texture.
