Seniors will find a range of activities in Thurston County. From the Capitol and the waterfront boardwalk to the Puget Sound Senior Games and community arts classes, there is something for every interest and level of ability. Aside from numerous activities open to anyone in the community, there are several available only to seniors.
The Senior Centers of Thurston County, one located in each town, organize a variety of activities. There are fitness programs, nutrition programs including daily lunches, arts and crafts activities, book clubs, card games, and more. Community events and volunteer opportunities are also available. The list of things to do is too long to list here, so give them a call to find out about whichever activity you are most interested in!
Trips and tours within and out of town are organized through the Senior Services for South Sound. In 2007 there are several nationan and international trips in addition to local travel to places like Seattle, area bazaars, or annual festivals. Take your pick from excursions such as National Parks Highlights with Las Vegas, Grand Tour of Switzerland, or The Splendors of Italy.
Thurston County is home to hundreds of small organizations and clubs, including several run by and for seniors. For example, the book club Olympia Senior PageTurners meets at the Senior Center on the third Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. To participate, simply read the book for that month and attend the meeting. You will expand your thinking as you participate in the lively exchange of ideas and opinions that each book generates. Many seniors also find themselves involved with one of the community clubs open to all ages, with the Lions, Rotary, the Kiwanis, and others well represented in Thurston County.
The Puget Sound Senior Games are held every summer and invite both first-time participants and life-time athletes to compete for fun and companionship, with the mission to promote health and well-being for seniors of all ages. Seniors can participate in groups or individually in events including cycling, pickleball, golf, billiards, walking, racquetball, swimming, track and field events, bowling and badminton. For the serious competitor, these games can lead to the National Senior Games as well. Many join simply for the fun of sport with like-minded people.
Other places to look for fun things to do include the many fitness programs specially tailored for seniors at the YMCA, with two locations in Thurston County. Fitness and health classes are also available through Providence St Peter Hospital, many of which are free or low cost and tailored specifically to the needs of seniors.
The local newspaper The Olympian lists information on activities, events, and volunteer opportunities in the Thurston County area. Much of this information can be found on their web page as well as in the printed paper. This is your best source for information on activities held by various clubs in the county. You will also find information on community events and classes through the respective city and county Parks and Recreation departments – or contact your city directly for a schedule of current classes.
A last place for information worthy of mentioning is the local library system, with branches throughout Thurston County. Events hosted by the library branches include computer courses and income tax workshops for seniors during the winter months.
