Conspiracies Can Exist

by sumonova

One of the main arguments of people who do not believe in conspiracies, is that the government would not be able to conduct cover-ups in the modern age. The argument points to the overwhelming presence of the media in today’s society. Contained in this article are arguments to counter those.

In 1974, a Congressional panel uncovered a covert operation by the CIA and the military called Project MKUltra. The Church Committee uncovered a plot to test illicit and addictive drug on the unwilling population in an attempt to learn the secrets of mind control.

While this seems like science fiction, it was actually true. Much of the funding for project MkUltra came from the sale of LSD, cocaine, and other drugs to the general population.

At any given time, only a handful of CIA agents and military officials knew about the existence of Project MKUltra. The scientists and doctors that were conducting the experiments rarely actually knew what they were doing.

By keeping the knowledge of this Project to a select few individuals, the government and military were able to conduct these secret experiments for twenty years. The fewer people who know about a cover-up, the lower the chance to expose the truth.

A more current example of a cover-up by the government comes in the form of the claim of WMDs in Iraq. The misinformation about Weapons of Mass Destruction had to come from somewhere. The media, and Congress have been inquiring about the source of this misinformation to no avail. The White House should have all of the information that it needs to expose who the guilty party is. They have never done so.

After the horrors of 9-11, Congress made motions to conduct investigations into the errors made in the prevention of the attacks. Public record shows that the President attempted to make a Presidential Directive against the investigation. His Directive was overruled because of a technicality in anti-terrorism laws of the time. According to the 9-11 Congressional Report, the White House refused to hand over the email recordings from the days preceding 9-11. The Veil of National Security was used.

A further use of the Veil of National Security was when it was released that George Bush had authorized the illegal phone tapping of hundreds of citizens. When the White House was inquired about this, the claim that full authority was allowed for this under the Homeland Security Acts and the Patriot Act.

If anything leaks from the government today, the Veil of National Security is the secret weapon. Because of the Patriot Act, the government can conduct any action that they can deem as, “For the best interest of the public.”

If it were not for the Patriot Act, Congress would have been able to impeach the President for the authorization of what should have been considered as illegal wiretapping. Instead, protection is given by a set of laws that most of the American populace do not agree with.

The Patriot Act allows for government cover-up. It is the tool that the government has wanted for years. Instead of asking if conspiracies can exist, we should actually wonder what the government could do now. What we don’t know, may hurt us one day.
