Decorative topiary trees are lovely accents for your home. They can be made in many different themes from country to elegant Victorian. While they may sell for fifty dollars or more in a home decor store, you can create one easily with minimal expense and effort.
1. Styrofoam ball
2. Wooden Dowel
3. Dry or fake flowers
4. Tacky craft glue
5. Terra cotta pot
6. Styrofoam to fill the pot
7. Sphagnum moss
Decorating the Pot
The terra cotta can be kept plain if you like a natural looking topiary tree decoration. It is also nice, however, to paint the pot to match your home. Since terra cotta is porous, you will have to apply a few coats, or use primer paint in the beginning.
Once the pot is dry, you should fill it with the styrofoam, or plant foam, entirely. The sphagnum moss should be layered to cover the top. A bit of the tacky glue can be used to hold the moss in place.
Decorating the Tree Ball
The styrofoam ball is the top part of your topiary tree. In order to cover it, you will be using your silk or dried flowers and plants. Cut each flower stem to about two to three inches, dip it in the tacky glue, and insert it into the styrofoam ball. You want the ball to be completely hidden by the flowers and foliage.
Constructing the Tree
In order to construct the decorative topiary tree, you will insert the wooden dowel straight into the pot. Use a level to make sure it is straight in. The styrofoam will hold it in place. You should coat the top with craft glue and press it carefully into the flower-covered ball. Be careful not to push any of the flowers out, or to push too far. Then the main structure of the topiary tree is complete.
To finish the topiary tree, you might like to wind a thin vine around the dowel stem. This will give it a more realistic look. Conversely, you might like to decorate it with satin ribbons in a color to match the flowers.
You can also tie ribbons around the plant pot, or arrange small objects in the moss on top of the pot. You might want to include some fallen flowers on the sphagnum moss that match those in the topiary ball.
This decorative topiary tree craft can be used as a centerpiece on a table or as a decorator accent in any room of your home. It is easy to construct and is inexpensive as well. It will add a touch of elegance to your home.
