The Creation Museum, built in Petersburg, KY just south of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is set to open on May 28th, 2007. The 60,000 square foot museum will describe the history of the earth, as described solely through Biblical teachings. The 27 million dollar museum, which is debt-free and funded entirely by donation, will feature exhibits depicting Noah’s Ark, the Garden of Eden, and the idea that man and dinosaurs once coexisted. The Creation Museum is a literal interpretation of the Bible which firmly believes that idea that our earth was formed over the course of 6, 24 hour days by the one and only God. An interactive natural history museum, the Creation Museum, is sure to cause skepticism, create new believers, raise questions, and of course, evoke plenty of controversy.
Answers in Genesis, an organization which claims the true and literal interpretation of the Bible, developed the Creation Museum. Answers in Genesis is a Christian ministry which believes the Bible to be 100% accurate from Genesis to Revelation, and maintains that all Biblical teachings can be confirmed, rather than debunked, by science. The Creation Museum hopes to answer scientific questions which, to many, seem to discount Christian theory. For instance, Answers in Genesis believes that the Grand Canyon was not formed over millions of years by the Colorado River. In contrast, the ministry believes that the great flood, described in the book of Genesis, was an accurate historic event and through this event, the Grand Canyon was formed.
The Creation Museum has been designed to raise and answer questions, and also to be of entertainment value. More than 80 animatronic dinosaurs, a model of Noah’s Ark, and numerous other interactive exhibits will be featured throughout the museum. There is a special area just for kids, a bookstore, theater, planetarium, gift shop, and a restaurant. Classrooms are also available for special presentations, as well as an outdoor area complete with nature trails.
The Creation Museum chose the Cincinnati area to build because of its close proximity to so much of the country. The museum is also located just off of interstate-75, a highly traveled north to south interstate, and is just two exits away from an international airport.
Visitors of the Creation Museum will pay $19.95 for adults, $14.95 for seniors, and $9.95 for children 5 and older. There is no doubt that the demographics of the Creation Museum visitors will vary greatly. Those who support and believe in the Answers in Genesis Ministry will visit. Christians who are true to their faith, but may not be so sure about the reality of literal creationism will visit. Skeptics who only wish to discredit the museum will visit. And of course the curious, those without a predetermined agenda, are also likely to visit.
