Anyone who has followed poker over the past couple of years has seen the game become escalated beyond anyone’s dreams, and new players have decided to try their luck, but not Daniel Negreanu, he has been playing pretty much all his life. He has played poker since he dropped out of high school in 1967, he decided then poker was what he wanted to do with his life.
Daniel Negreanu started out playing at charity casinos and illegal games he found around his home city of Toronto. He was working on building his bankroll so he could go to Las Vegas and pursue his dream of becoming a professional poker player. He finally gave it a shot when he turned 21, but Vegas took him down, and he had to move back to Toronto to rebuild his bankroll.
It wasn’t until 1997 that he started to win events; he won two events at the world poker finals at Foxwoods, earning $133,600 as well as being named best all around player for the tournament. Daniel Negreanu followed up this win with another win at the 1998 world series of poker by winning $169,460 at the $2,000 pot-limit Hold’em event. This win meant he was the youngest WSOP bracelet winner in history, until 2004.
In the next few years Daniel Negreanu would become one of the most successful tournament poker players in history. Negreanu would win two more World Series bracelets and two World Poker Tour events. He appeared at 11 final tables, and was named the World Series of Poker player of the year in 2004.
Next step in his career was being the “Poker Ambassador” for Wynn Las Vegas resort, to play for stakes in their poker room. This however hindered his ability to play high stakes outside of the Wynn; in October 2005 he opted out of his contract. In place of this he started his own online poker room Full Contact Poker, and plays here under the screen name “KidPoker”. In 2006 he used his online poker site to launch a bid to have a protégé who Daniel would attempt to transform into a poker all star. The first protégé was Brian Fidler who won the online tournament and a live table tournament for the opportunity.
Daniel Negreanu is labeled as one of the best at reading his opponents and often times can tell what a player is holding in their hands. When asked about this uncanny skill he simply says he watches what hands players play, how they play them, and how capable they are of playing these hands.
Daniel Negreanu is slated to be in a reality television series next year released by FOX called “Rob and Amber: Against the Odds” where he will mentor reality television personality Rob Mariano, trying to make him a professional poker player.
Daniel Negreanu has written hundreds of articles for Card Player Magazine, and contributed to Doyle Brunson’s Super System II. He also has tutored players on the web as part of an online poker school run through his website and has personally tutored actor Toby Maguire. It has also be announced that in 2006 he will write a book with a team of “Superstar Contributors” called “Daniel Negreanu’s Power Hold’em Strategy”, modeled after Doyle Brunson’s “Super/System”.
Daniel Negreanu is one of my favorite poker players, he is fun at the tables and I love to see him tell players what cards they are holding. Sometimes its scary how well he can tell a player what cards they have. He is always fun to watch when the camera is on him and he is one of the best poker players on the circuit. One day I want to be face to face with Daniel Negreanu at a final table, I will probably lose but it would be a lot of fun to say I got to play against Daniel Negreanu heads up, and a story I would never forget.
