DIY Project: Family Room Game Board Coffee Table

by sumo nova

This Game Board Coffee Table is perfect for furnishing your home family room, a kid’s playroom, or even an eclectic home office. Get the kids involved in building this Game Board coffee table and make a hole family DIY Project weekend out of it!

My favorite thing about this Game Board coffee table is that you can use the game pieces from your favorite games to play on it with!

You can make it for your own home over the weekend. Working with plywood and MDF can sound a little intimidating, but you will be pleasantly surprised how easy it really is!

To make this Game Board Coffee Table you will need to spread it out over a couple days, so working over the weekend will probably work best. While you won’t be working on the craft project all day long, you do need to allow for time for materials to dry.

Be sure to buy your glass table top first and built your Game Board coffee table to fit it. This will save you a lot of time and money!

To Make a Game Board Coffee Table You Will Need:

Your favorite games

Trip to Kinko’s

Decoupage

4 sheets of plywood or MDF cut to the same size

1 sheet of MDF for the coffee table top

8 L brackets

Primer

Paint

Paintbrushes

Go ahead and take a trip with the kids to Kinko’s first thing. Have them compile all of their favorite game boards. They will only need the boards, not the game pieces.

Have the game boards photocopied in the same size and color at Kinko’s. Now, cut them out down to size if there is any excess white paper around the edge.

Now, to build the base of you game board coffee table the first step is to decide what size you want it to be.

Make the base slightly smaller than the game board coffee table top.

Have your piece of MDF or plywood that is meant to be the top cut first. Now, measure how wide the tabletop is. Measure this to get the dimensions for your tile table base.

Have your 4 pieces of MDF cut to size. A good height for a coffee table is 2.5 feet tall. You can make the square to fit your tabletop.

Now, the first step is to prim the front, tops, and back of your sheets of MDF or plywood. Let this dry, and then paint on a coat of paint in any color you wish.

Install an L bracket to hold the four pieces together in a square. Install an L bracket at the top and bottom of each corner. The mosaics should be on the outside.

Now, install the top of the coffee table using a few L brackets as well.

Once you have the coffee table assembled flip it over right side up.

Now, take you’re photocopied game boards and paint some decoupage medium on the back of them. Paint some decoupage medium on the table as well.

Now, carefully place the game board wherever you wish. Repeat this step adhering your other game boards.

Tip: Have extra photocopies made if you want to decoupage the sides of this coffee table on the base as well. You can overlap the pieces for a fun look, but do not overlap the game boards on the top, or you will not be able to play your favorite board games with the kids.

Once the decoupage has dried you are finished. Stand the Game Board Coffee Table up and gather around with the kids for some great family game night fun!
