DIY Project: French Country Antique Paint Process for a Laminate or Wood Trundle Bed

by sumonova

Trundle beds are a great way to sleep quite a few extra people without taking up a ton of space in your guest bedroom. This French Country take on a plain or boring trundle bed is a great way to redecorate an old trundle bed into a new and fresh look in your guest bedroom.

Anyone can take an old trundle bed and turn it into a French country inspired trundle bed with a few easy steps.

Those cheap or plain fake wood Trundle Beds are perfect for French Country antiquing. Try adding on some pre made wooden embellishments from your local home improvement store before you paint your old bed. This is a great way to add some elegance to a plain bed.

All you need to do is wood glue on the pre craved wooden embellishments. Let this dry for at least 24 hours before you start painting the French country trundle bed. Try to work in symmetrical patterns that will look the best when adding these embellishments.

Here is a list of supplies you will need to start French Country antiquing and resurfacing your old Trundle Bed:

Primer
Reynard Paint and Porch Light Paint from Sherwin Williams (Terra Cotta and Yellow)
Roller paint brushes
A variety of 2″, 3″, or 4″ paintbrushes
Wood stain
Glaze
Sandpaper
Drop clothes
Cheap, outdated, or plain Trundle Bed

Now, the colors I recommended are a nice Terra Cotta and Yellow paint from Sherwin Williams. The yellow will be the base. You can choose your own colors, but I thought you might enjoy some recommendation. Terra cotta is a wonderful French country paint color.

Sand you trundle bed

Wipe the dust off with a dry rag.

Now, you are ready to put a coat of primer. The French Country paint technique will not stick to your surface if you don’t sand and then prime your Trundle Bed.

What you paint your surface with will really effect the look of your French country trundle bed surface. A foam roller will create the smoothest surface. A 4 inch brush will give a more textured look.

Allow your primer to dry completely.

Put on a coat of your base paint, which is the Porch light yellow from Sherwin Williams.

Allow this to dry.

Now, paint on the Terra cotta color.

Allow this to dry.

So, now that the French Country Trundle Bed color has dried you are ready to start antiquing it. Start by using the sand paper to rough up edges and other areas that would typically be used over time.

This will allow your Porch light yellow to show through the terra cotta paint you applied.

Once you have finished sanding the French Country Trundle Bed wipe the surface down with a clean dry cloth.

Now, make a mixture of ½ wood stain and ½ glaze to darken your piece.

Use a white rag to rub the stain onto the French Country Trundle Bed. Do this evenly and apply one whole coat before stopping.

Repeat until you have a rich and dark look.
