This Easter egg shaped plate charger is a fun craft kids can make as a gift for Mom, Dad, or even the grand parents. This simple Easter egg inspired plate charger is made of air drying clay and looks fabulous on your Easter dinner table.
The kids can make this Easter egg inspired plate charger craft for less than $10, probably around $5 depending on what craft materials you already have. This is a fun project for kids as well as adults.
To Make An Easter egg inspired plate charger you will need:
Air Drying Clay (Like Active Clay)
Clay working tools (Or a tooth pick, pencil, paring knife…)
Pastel colored Acrylic Paints (Optional)
Clear Acrylic Spray Paint (Not Optional)
Embellishments, like beads, glass stones…(Optional)
Rolling pin
The first step is to cut off a piece of your air-drying clay. Roll it out to about 1/2 inch thick. You can make this Easter egg inspired plate charger as big or small as you want. I think about 14 inches tall is a very nice sized Easter bunny shaped platter. You do want to be able to see your kids art work underneath the dinner plate!
Now, use a toothpick to trace out your sized Easter egg shape on to the clay slab you rolled out. The good thing about clay is that you can draw your shape and if you do not like it, simply smooth it over with your finger. Once you have your sized Easter egg outline made, use a paring knife to cut the plate charger out. Remove any of the excess clay and use it for the next step.
Tip: Try drawing your Easter egg out on paper. Once you have the design right, cut it out with scissors. You can trace his outline on the clay with a toothpick. You should also have the kids lay a dinner plate out on the paper, so they know to make the egg larger and wider then the dinner plate.
Break off some pieces of clay and roll them out into coils. They work best at about ΒΌ inch thick, but you can play around with that measurement. Use these coils to build up some footing on the bottom of the plate charger. You can use a paintbrush or your finger to put water on the bottom of the egg and then lay your coils on top. Use you finger to smooth the clay into each other to make a finished plate charger. I like to make this footing about 1/2 inch tall, but again, that is optional. It is perfectly fine for the Easter egg plate charger to lay flat on the table.
Now, you can leave your entire Easter egg inspired plate charger smooth or add embellishments or even carve in details with your clay working tools. I like to carve in designs using the toothpick. Next I like to outline any details, like polka dots, swirls, and lines. Once you have finished embellishing your clay, let it sit out and dry completely.
Now, you can either paint your clay Easter egg inspired plate charger or simply leave eat the color of the clay. No matter what you do you need to spray it with a coat of clear acrylic spray paint once it is dry. You will not be able to ever wash the Easter egg inspired plate charger if you don’t add this coat of clear paint. It would also not be very safe to put food on. Never put this craft project in the dish washer. To clean simply wipe down with a damp sponge.
If you are going to paint it with acrylic paints your can paint them directly onto the dry clay. Allow your acrylic paints to dry, and then spray on your clear coat.
This Easter egg inspired plate charger looks great if you paint it in pastel colors. You can also sponge on colors as well!
