Nearly all of us have received a call from a telemarketer. Many of us have probably worked as a telemarketer. With all the common annoyances that we face each day, telemarketers are still at the top of the list. There are many effective steps on dealing with telemarketers. It is important to understand when you receive a call from a telemarketer, that many of them mean no harm. They are simply doing the job that they are assigned to do so that they can make money to pay the bills and survive in this financially challenging world. Telemarketers are taught to be persistent. They are taught to be so persistent, in fact, that when I was a telemarketer, I came up with a saying that won over my bosses, and that was “There is no such thing as a ‘no’ answer, it just means that you must think of a more creative approach”. Many telemarketers are not even paid unless that final sale goes through. This is why I try to be at least considerate when I receive one of these calls. The person on the other end is simply trying to make a living, and their tactics are the result of hours of insane training where they are pushed to alleviate the word “no” from their vocabulary.
You should ensure that you try to be as polite as possible. There is no reason to immediately start fussing and cussing the person on the other end because you realize they are a telemarketer. They may have interrupted your dinner, they may have waked you up, and they may have called in the middle of a television show that you enjoy, but they had no way of knowing this. They may be very annoying, but they are not telepathic. If they have called at an inappropriate time, simply explain this to them. They may ask for a better time to call. If you give them a time, you can expect to hear from them. If you are not interested, or do not have a need for what they are promoting, let them know. Do not put off the things until tomorrow that you can do today.
If you receive a call from a telemarketer, and you have informed them that you are not interested, you have said “no”, and they are still hassling you, explain to them that you would like to end the call immediately. Let them know that if the call does not come to an end that you will hang up. You have at least warned them. If they continue to persist, you should just hang up the phone. I have actually tried to inform a telemarketer that I wish to discontinue the call and they simply talk over me. One time, a woman just kept talking as I tried to talk. Finally, I just asked, “Are you even listening to what I have to say?” This caught her attention. You could tell that she was reading from a script and was taught to keep on reading no matter what. Sometimes, you simply have to just hang up.
If you are talking to someone who is promoting an item over the phone and you did not call him or her, be extremely cautious about giving out any personal information over the phone. In today’s world, there are many frauds taking place where a person calls others to try to gain important financial information just to steal their identity and make fraudulent charges with their bank and credit card numbers. If you are interested in what the person has to offer, you should ask for a number where you can call them back. You should then hang up and return their call. If they refuse to give you a number, then you should refuse to give any personal information.
Last, but not least, if you do not wish to be hassled by telemarketers, ask them to remove you from the list that they obtained your name from.
