When I first saw a friend’s baby sitting in the Bumbo, I was intrigued. He was only 3 months old, but was sitting perfectly in the Bumbo. So I did some research about the Bumbo and realized I had to have one!
Before a baby can sit on his own, he can sit in the Bumbo. It is essentially like a booster seat for babies. As long as the baby has some head control, the Bumbo will use the baby’s own body weight to keep him/her sturdy in the seat, with no straps or anything like that. It works because the seat is at a lower level than the leg openings. This provides proper orthopedic support for the baby, which assists in correct spinal development. I also found that my son’s head control improved immensely after we started using the Bumbo.
Many doctors recommend the Bumbo to their patients, especially for babies with special needs, such as Down’s syndrome. It is often used by therapists for babies with special needs. It has also proved helpful for babies with reflux that need to be upright as much as possible.
It’s also easy to clean. It doesn’t get worn by water or cleaners, and I can wipe it off easily with a washcloth. Plain and simple, I love the Bumbo.
I was a bit shocked to find out that this simple foam seat cost nearly $40, but it has been worth every penny. We bought our Bumbo at Babies R Us, but it can also be purchased online at the Bumbo website.
The Bumbo has made my life so much easier. Even though my son is now sitting up, he is still too small for things like restaurant high chairs, and so we are still using the Bumbo all the time. It is so light and easy to carry around, we take it almost everywhere. People who see him in it are always so impressed with how straight and comfortably he sits I the Bumbo. Here are some things I have used the Bumbo for:
Around 3 or 4 months old, my son got too big to carry around in his car seat everywhere. Plus, he didn’t like being in the car seat, and being in it all the time can cause a flat head. As an alternative, I started bring the Bumbo with me to the grocery store, Walmart, Target, and anywhere else that I planned on using a shopping cart. I would simply put my son in the Bumbo inside the shopping cart (the big part, not the baby seat). He LOVES when we take him shopping in the Bumbo. We clip toys to the side of the cart and he can sit and play and enjoy a fun ride through the market. Being in the Bumbo, as opposed to his car seat or stroller, provides him a great view of everything in the store, keeping him occupied with distractions throughout the trip.
Going out to eat with a baby can be hard enough without trying to figure out where to put the baby. Many restaurants provide slings to hold the car seat carriers, but as my son got bigger he got fussy if we left him in the car seat while we ate. Now, we just bring the Bumbo in the restaurant with us and request a booth. I just put the Bumbo next to me in the booth, and my son enjoys being at the table with everyone, where he can sit and play with toys during the meal.
When we started feeding my son rice cereal and other solids, we used his high chair when we were at home. However, we are often visiting other family members at times when he would normally eat, but not everybody has a high chair. Bringing the Bumbo with us allows us to feed him in a comfortable sitting position, anywhere we go.
