Family Craft Project: Painted Game Board Floor Cloth

by sumo nova

This simple painted Game Board canvas floor mat is a great way to really get thee whole family involved in a fun game night. This hand painted Game Board painted rug is perfect for a family room, game room, or even a child’s room. The best part is you can customize your painted canvas rug to have the board games you love the best.

You can temporarily replace existing rugs that are displayed all year long with this simple homemade Game Board rug.

To Make a Painted Game Board Floor Rug You Will Need:

3 -4 Yards of Per primed Canvas

Your favorite games (for inspiration)

Acetate

Exacto Knife

Black Marker

Acrylic paints

Polyurethane

Paint Brushes

Pencil

Painter’s Tape

Duct Tape or No Sew

Paint trays

Paint rollers

Start by cutting your Game Board rug out to size. I cut mine 8X10 feet. You can make it as small as your want or larger if you choose. Other standard rugs sizes are 5X7′, 3X5′, and 9X12′. So you choose. You can also simply measure your floor space and make your own custom sized rug.

Fold in your rough edges about 1 inch towards the back of the canvas Game Board rug. You can simply duct tape these down since no one will see the underside of your painted canvas Game Board floor rug.

If you prefer though you can use a product like no sew. When you iron down the edges though, make sure you place a rag between the primed canvas and your iron. The primer will melt and burn. It will also ruin your iron. You could also use fabric glue to hem the edge to even simply sew it down with a sewing machine.

Now, time to personalize your Game Board canvas painted rug.

I like to use painters tape to tape of a five-inch border along the outside edges of the rug. Then in the middle you can paint all of your favorite games that you love to play with the kids on family game night. This is the time to get creative!

Now for the real fun. You need to create some stencils using your family’s favorite game boards.

To do this you will need one sheet for acetate per game board.

Open up your favorite game board. Lay the acetate sheet on top.

Use the thin or extra fine Sharpie to trace out the game board feature that are the most important.

Use the exacto knife to cut out your stencil pattern. Be sure to keep the important piece you have to completely cut out. For example, if you have to cut out the center if the letter O, then keep the inner circle.

Now, you can probably fit between 6 and 10 game board stencils on your newly painted rug.

Cut all of your game board stencils out first and ten ay them out as desired on the rug Use the painter’s tape to hold them in place. You could also use the stencil adhesive spray.

Now, start stenciling. Use acrylic paints and stencil brushes.

Allow your stencil paints to dry complete.

Once you paint has dried you need to apply a few coats of polyurethane to the painted canvas game board floor mat. I recommend applying three coats following the instructions on your polyurethane.

To clean your Painted game board floor rug you can use a damp soapy sponge. Use a mild detergent and very little water and you should be fine.
