Most anyone who owns pets knows how important it can be to find a product that removes pet odors from soft surfaces such as carpet and furniture. What many don’t know is how wide of an assortment of products there are that serve that purpose or that many store brand products work just as well as the more expensive name brands. I have a dog, cat, hamster, and several fish, so sometimes pet odor becomes a serious problem. The two products I use are Febreze Fabric Refresher and Dollar General Fabric Refresher.
Febreze Fabric Refresher is manufactured by Proctor & Gamble and comes in a wide variety of different scents and formulas including those made specifically for pet odors, car odors, allergen reducing, and antimicrobial as well as fragrances of extra strength, Meadows and Rain, Citrus and Light, Linen and Sky, and Spring and Renewal. However to my knowledge, the Dollar General Fabric Refresher spray, which is manufactured by Dolgencorp, inc., comes in only one formula and fragrance – Super Strength Odor Eliminator. It has the same fragrance as Febreze Fabric Refresher’s Extra Strength formula. While Febreze Fabric Refresher does have a specific formula intended for the removal of pet odors, I always buy the regular Extra Strength Febreze Fabric Refresher. I have never found any real reason to buy the specific formula because the Extra Strength removes odors just as well. I do however buy the specific formulas for use in cars and for allergen removal. One downside to Dollar General Fabric Refresher is that these additional formulas are not currently available.
The most striking difference between these two brands is the difference in price. When purchased at Dollar General Stores, Febreze Fabric Refresher costs $5 for a 27 ounce bottle while Dollar General Brand Fabric Refresher costs only $1.50 for a 33 ounce bottle. Purchasing the Dollar General brand is much more cost effective because not only is the price lower, you also receive more product for the price.
I have allergies and am sensitive to strong perfume-like smells and have not had an issue with either one of these products. Nor have I had any issues when I have purchased other fragrances of Febreze Fabric Refreshers. They both remove odors while leaving a fresh, clean scent in the air without overpowering your sense of smell with perfume that only masks the problem.
The most important factor in a product designed to eliminate odors is, of course, how well it actually performs. In my experience, both Febreze Fabric Refresher and Dollar General Fabric Refresher work really well to eliminate even stubborn pet odors such as that wet dog smell on furniture, litter box smell in the carpet, and most impressively urine smells from those occasional accidents that occur inside the house.
When comparing Febreze Extra Strength Fabric Refresher to Dollar General Super Strength Fabric Refresher, the results are very similar. Both products have a nearly identical smell straight out of the bottle. When used to treat odors, both get rid of the smells completely. I do think that Febreze has a slightly stronger fragrance than the Dollar General brand when being sprayed out of the bottle, but the difference is extremely slight. Once the fabric refreshers dry, both products have the exact same effect. Odors are eliminated and the surface is left smelling clean and refreshed without a heavy lingering smell. .
Dollar General Fabric Refresher states in the directions not to over saturate fabrics because build up may occur, but I have never experienced this. Any surface I have ever sprayed with either that or Febreze Fabric Refresher has never ended up with any sort of build up of the product on it even after repeated applications on places such as carpet and furniture. I also use both products to freshen my king sized comforter that does not fit in the washing machine and have not had any issues with fabric refresher products leaving a built up residue on it either.
Both Febreze Fabric Refresher and Dollar General Fabric Refresher work really well at their intended purpose of eliminating odors all around the home as opposed to covering them up as most air fresheners do. Overall, I recommend Dollar General Fabric Refresher for every day use and pet odor removal simply because it is so much more cost effective and it performs equally well. However if you need to remove odors from a vehicle or wish to eliminate allergens or bacteria from your home, you will need to spend the extra money and buy Febreze Fabric Refresher simply because Dollar General does not currently manufacture these special formulas.
