Every kid has a favorite board game. These simple place mats let he kids recreate their favorite games and share them with their family.
You could host a family game night and serve dinner on your game placemats, then wipe them off with some soapy water, and play a few rounds!
These simple game board place mats take about 2 to 3 hours to make, depending on the child. Each one should cost you about $4 or less. The more game board place mats the kids make, then less each one will cost.
To Make These Simple and Fun Game Board Dinner mats You Will need:
Pre primed Canvas
No Sew (optional)
Ruler or tape measure
Fabric glue (optional)
Thin black sharpie marker
Black acrylic paint pen
Small artist paintbrushes
Clear acrylic spray paint or polyurethane
Now, the first step is to goes ahead and cut out your pre primed canvas to the right size for a game board place mat. I like to make them about 2.5 feet wide and about 14 inches tall. You can simply trace out a place mat onto the back of the pre primed canvas and cut it out.
Now, fold the rough edges under the placemat. I like to take a book and run it along the fold to get it really creased.
Now, flip the place mat over. Run a bead of fabric glue under each fold. Press the fabric down onto the back of the place mat. Make it as smooth and flat as possible.
Now, let this dry and you are ready to move on.
Let the kids use the fine sharpie black marker to draw out their game board. They could also use a pencil if they are worried about messing up. Colored chalk also shows up nicely on pre primed canvas and wipes away easily for quick fixes.
Now, for traditional game boards like monopoly the kids can use a straight edge or ruler to outline the boarder of their dinner place mat. If you already own the really version of the game, them break out the board and let the kids copy it.
If you have very imaginative kids or older kids that may want to make up their own games. This is a fun craft project for kids that love to invent fun new board games.
Now, once all the outlines have been made you can start painting in the colors. I recommend acrylic or tempera paints. They are affordable and come in a variety of colors.
Once all the game board colors have dried completely, and I do mean completely, then you can use the black paint pen to routine the game board. This will cover any wavy edges of color that are not perfect. Try buying a nice thick tipped black paint pen. Each line can be traced twice of are finished look.
Now, let this final paint pen detail dry on the game board place mat.
Finally, spray on a couple coats of clear acrylic spray paint. You could also roll on some coats of polyurethane. This will allow the kids to really get their dinner placemats messy when they eat, but allow for easy clean up when it is game time.
These simple game board place mats are perfect for traveling to. All you need to do is roll them up and throw them in your suitcase.
