While surfing through Associated Content, I came across an article written by Stacy Guilbeaux titled “Top Ten Songs by George Strait”. Since George, as I call him, as if he were a long lost friend, is only my favorite male country artist of all time, I began thinking about my favorite “songs by George”. The hardest part of creating my favorite George Strait songs is cutting it to only 10 songs, but I am going to try.
On the top of my list is “Amarillo by Morning”. This song has special meaning to my husband and I as it is the first song we danced to as Mr. and Mrs. I also like the lyrics to this song as it tells a story about a rodeo cowboy, and I happen to have had the opportunity to know several rodeo cowboys in my life. I also enjoy most songs that mention Texas in them.
Number two on my list of favorite songs by George Strait is “Blame it on Mexico”. This song is definitely one of my top favorites. I grew up in the western part of Texas and have actually seen ma Crosby’s in Acuna, Mexico. I also grew up listening to stories of trips to Mexico very similar to the story told by this song. Every time I hear this song, I have the opportunity to escape to my childhood and the stories I heard from the “older guys”.
Number three on this list is “The Seashores of Old Mexico”. I love this remake of an old country song. I also love the video, but who wouldn’t with George looking so fine! As with most of George Strait’s songs, this one also has a story to tell, which makes it very interesting for me.
“The Cowboy Rides Away” is number four on my list, but could easily move up as high as number two. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of knowing a cowboy personally would enjoy this song, I believe. Fortunately, I have been blessed with a life full of cowboys who are either family or friends and I now exactly what this song is saying and I like the way it says it. If you want to know about cowboys and the way they react to love and women, just listen to the story George tells while singing this song.
Number five on my list is “The Chair”. This song tells a story of a guy, probably in a bar in Texas, on in my imagination it happens in a bar in Texas. I can honestly say that I have been in a few bars in Texas, and have had pick up lines used on me, but not this exact one. But, I can definitely see this story in my mind every time I hear this song. I really think this is a great song and no one could sing it like George. How many women would like to be the woman George is singing to in this song?
The remaining five songs do not rank in any particular order, but are definitely in my top ten favorites. These are “You Look so Good in Love”, “I Want to Dance With You”, “Stars on the Water”, and “The Fireman”.
“You Look so Good in Love” is a beautiful love song. In this song, George tells the story of reuniting with the one who got away and realizing that she is truly happy and in love with the new man in her life. Anyone who has been in this situation can relate to this song, whether they are the one that got away or the one who let them get away.
“I Want to Dance with You” is another one of George’s songs that makes woman wish that George or at least her guy, was singing it to her exclusively. This love song has a catchy beat that adds to the good feeling it gives the listener, while delivering the message found in the lyrics.
“Stars on the Water” is a great sing-along song, that talks about partying in Louisiana, “from Beaumont to Biloxi”. This song will draw you in with its great beat and have you singing along before you know it.
“The Fireman” is one of George’s older songs, but still brings a smile to my face whenever I hear it. This song reminds me of my brother because he loved it when it was first released and would swear that it was written specifically for him, even though he was just a teenager.
George Strait is a great country singer with many great country songs. It was difficult to put this list together, and should I do it again I am sure that a few of these songs would be replaced with other great songs.
