I know that every parent wishes their child came with an instruction manual , but they don’t. Here are some tried and true methods to get your kids to bed.
Method # 1:
This method is more for newborns to a few months of age. If your baby is having problems going to sleep try establishing a bedtime routine. Even babies understand routines. For instance , if you want your baby to go to bed at 8 pm try giving him/her a warm bath at about 7 pm. Give the bath water time to effect the mind. This should not be a play time bath , just some soothing warm water to put their mind in the place of sleep. Once out of the bath and get your baby dressed for bed make him/ her a nice warm bottle. Hold your baby and feed him/her until they fall asleep. once asleep slowly place your baby in his/ her own bed. This should do the trick. If your baby is on cereal already try giving him/her a warm cereal bottle instead of a regular bottle. This will fill them up more and they are likely to sleep longer.
Method # 2 :
Once your child has reached one year of age you should have already established some sort of bedtime routine. If you have not try this to help your situation. For starters , Don’t let your child sleep with you. Yes it is nice to have your child close but believe me when I tell you this is a habit you do not want to begin. While your child is still a toddler it makes it an easier transition for both parent and child if you sit with them until they fall asleep. Of course you can still do the warm bath and transition into bedtime. The best thing i have seen work for young children is reading a story or singing a soft song. This seems to konk the kids right out. You too if you are not careful.
Method # 3 :
This is more for Elementary age children. Your children at this age still respond positively to routine things. This includes bedtimes. The best route I have ever found is to have them shower about thirty to forty minuets before bed and give them ten minute ques before bed. For example , there is 20 minutes until bedtime and then give them a ten minute warning. Tuck them into bed and go on about your usual evening.
These methods work well for any age really. The only way for these methods to work however is for you to stick to the routine no matter what. When it is bedtime do not let anything distract the kids from that. If this is something that you have never tried or done with your kids then it could take a few days for it to work. Be patient though , it will work.
