Picture the world as a giant microwave heating up Americans and people all over the world. The cause: humans. Many Americans right now are debating about whether Global Warming is real or something false. Leaders in the United States and abroad contend that Global Warming is a very real threat and some sort of action should be taken to prevent the world from ending in a massive heatwave.
Al Gore’s and Arnold Schwarzeneggar’s Plans
Former Vice President and possible President-to-be of 2008 has just won an Academy Award for his film and documentary called “An Inconvenient Truth.” This documentary shows Americans how Global Warming, according to Al Gore, is a real threat that should be guarded against now. He is taking this campaign all across America to convince people that they need to start taking action against Global Warming or they will inevitably face the ugly consequence: death by Global Warming.
Furthermore, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has unveiled his plan titled “Hydrogen Highways” that would create automobiles with a reduction in greenhouse gases.
Are They Really Preventing Global Warming?
But let’s just take a look at how serious a problem Global Warming seems to be. For these two popular men, Global Warming may seem like a terrible problem for them to preach to other people, but do they follow what they preach? For the year 2006, Al Gore has paid nearly $1500 in electric bills each month (MSNBC). His spokespeople contend that, of course, Al Gore makes up for it by spending even more money going around the country preaching about this terrible threat of Global Warming.
In addition, Schwarzenegger uses a private jet airplane to get from place to place and a lot of times this only involves traveling only from Sacramento to Santa Monica, California. On this hour long trip in his private jet, he releases more than 8,500 pounds of carbon-dioxide gas into the air (Los Angeles Times). Of course the Governor is offsetting his actions by planting several trees to combat the amount of carbon dioxide that he puts into the air each time he flies.
If Global Warming is such a problem, however, it seems like one would need to do a little more than just plant a few trees and talk about the threat. A possible solution wouldn’t be to reduce the amount of your gas and electricity bills each month would it? Another possible solution wouldn’t be to fly less and find other alternate forms of transportation would it?
What Scientists Think
Some scientists are divided on the issue of Global Warming, though. Some say that yes, Global Warming is a serious threat that needs to be taken with all seriousness and caution.
Others, however, contend that Global Warming is no more of a hoax than the chain letters that you receive in the mail. Some people actually say that the Earth is just going through a cycle of changes and reducing any amount of carbon dioxide emissions by humans would do hardly anything to change the cycle anyway. And perhaps this is just a cycle, and it is a theory that needs to be focused on with more research and possibility.
Hopefully in the near future America and others who debate about Global Warming will be able to come to a conclusion as to whether or not it is actually something to be worried about or not. Deciding now will save everyone in the United States and other countries not only a lot of heartache, but billions of dollars also!
