My wife and I recently dined at a Golden Corral restaurant in Glen Burnie, Maryland. They are a national chain though and I’m sure the quality of food is quite similar at all locations. The great advantage of a restaurant like Golden Corral is the amount of options you have when you don’t know exactly what you want to eat. They have a large variety of food, and it’s all reasonably well done.
When you first arrive, especially on a Saturday night the only real negative can be the wait. It can take 10-20 minutes to get through the line to pay for your meal and receive your first set of plates, sodas, and utensils. After you pay the staff will assist you in finding a table for your group to dine at. I will say that considering our group was a group of four adults along with three children under two years old it was nice that they have high chairs with wheels in the front of the restaurant before you get in line so you can wheel the kids with you as you wait in line.
After being seated, your server will introduce themselves and offer to bring you some fresh rolls. I strongly encourage you to request extras of these as they are some of the best yeast rolls I’ve had. They are very soft, and come to your table nice and warm with a butter spread. Honestly though, the rolls do not need the butter they are great plain.
The food options at Golden Corral include items such as a salad bar, soups and chili, and then a large selection for entrees and sides. The entrees include grilled steak and other meats that are cooked in front of you at the buffet set-up. Other entrees that I like there are bourbon chicken, fried chicken, rotisserie chicken, pot roast, and spaghetti. On certain nights they will also have seafood options on the buffet. Sides that are very good include macaroni and cheese, marinated mushrooms, mashed potatoes, onions and peppers, several vegetables, and cornbread.
My favorite choices on the buffet are the fried chicken which has a nice pepper flavor to it, the bourbon chicken as long as you get it before it sits on the warmer too long, the cornbread, and the steak. All of these are done as well as I can do them at home, and of course on an average night nobody is going to make that large a variety of foods at home. As far as sides, the mashed potatoes are also very good with their gravy.
We found these choices to be a great variety. The other thing we love about this is that with the age of our kids they can be picky eaters. We are able to get a little bit of a few different choices for the kids when we first go up and then go back once we find out what they are in the mood to eat that night. That makes this a great option for parents of kids in the age range that ours are. Actually, you will see kids of all ages there. My only complaint is that despite the requests from the restaurant, many parents fail to accompany their young children to the buffet and sometimes that can cause small issues with the kids being a little inconsiderate of people around them.
Another thing that the kids and us adults will love is the dessert option area. They have a large variety of desserts including pies, cakes, cookies, ice cream, and brownies. Save room because almost all of these are made fresh on the premises and are very good. My favorite dessert is rather simple, it is the banana pudding that has real bananas, nilla wafers, and whipped cream. The brownies are also very good and tasty. My wife enjoys the fruit cobblers that they have along with the ice cream to top it off with.
Prices may vary from state to state, but in our area a meal for two including all you can drink soda while at the restaurant (they also have an option if you want to be able to take your cups home full of soda), runs about $25. This is very nice considering the large variety of items you can choose from and the fact that I have rarely had a complaint about the quality of these items. We probably eat here on average for one meal every other month. Another thing that greatly impresses me is the fact that if you check out their website you can find nutritional information on almost every item on the buffet! I strongly recommend Golden Corral for those nights where you know you want a variety of foods for dinner.
