Grey’s Anatomy is currently in it’s 3rd hit season. Although I was not a loyal viewer the first season, it has become my favorite show within the past 2 years. No one knows life, drama, suspense, and love like the creators of Grey’s Anatomy. Over the past 3 seasons I have grown to appreciate Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) as my favorite character. However, the Dr. Burke on Grey’s Anatomy is much different than the Isaiah Washington in real life.
Dr. Burke from Grey’s Anatomy
We have all come to love Preston Burke. He has a noble air to his personality that draws everyone into his presence. He is known as the best cardio-thoracic surgeon in the country even after his full recovery from a gunshot wound. Dr. Burke desperately loves an emotionally unavailable intern that has commitment issues. This has become an endearing quality on the show. No matter what the Dr. Burke from Grey’s Anatomy says, everyone eagerly listens.
Isaiah Washington in Previous Seasons
In previous seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, Isaiah Washington has made several appearances on talk shows and news programs. Everyone wants to get an interview with one of the hottest stars on the hottest television program. During these interviews, Mr. Washington has appeared, not only gracious, but also polite and considerate. For instance, on an Oprah Appearance he spoke of his spirituality, and of African American rights. On another Oprah appearance he said he wanted his character on Grey’s Anatomy to do charity medical work in Africa. Later, we got a much different impression of Isaiah Washington.
More Recent Isaiah Washington
The first flicker that something was wrong on the set of Grey’s Anatomy came when there was report of a rumble. It was said that remarks were said about homosexuality and Isaiah Washington threw Patrick Dempsey against the wall. Later, Mr. Washington was reported to say more statements that were considered politically incorrect. When he later checked himself into a rehabilitation facility, the whole world knew that something was wrong.
Even though Isaiah Washington has a shady character in real life, I still can’t get enough of Dr. Preston Burke. It seems strange to me that I can completely ignore an actor’s real persona to appreciate a television show, but I can. I desperately hope Mr. Washington’s questionable ways do not get him kicked off of Grey’s Anatomy, because the whole staff at Seattle Grace would miss him dearly.
