You heard it right; a sponsored masturbation session was held last Saturday in Clerkenwell, London. It is stated that up to two hundred people were expected to show up and have orgasms for charity. It was also stated to have been a publicity stunt to raise awareness of safer sex practices, masturbation, and to clear up the myths surrounding them. I don’t think they got the desired amount of publicity though if only two hundred people came (figuratively speaking). I could find more than two hundred people just in my neighborhood that masturbate (don’t deny it; we know you do it too).
After the hosts of the event cleared the air and stated their good intentions they were even backed by many religious groups and the police. My question is- If you’re going to support this cause why not show up and lend a hand (literally)? Is there a better way to gain support of such an event then by having the leaders of religious groups and the police there showing it? I know I would donate (monetarily of course) to a cause that gave me that many laughs.
I really don’t understand how hundreds of people masturbating together is suppose to get the discussion of safe sex going though. Masturbation is not a frequent discussion topic in my circle of friends and family but I can’t imagine a bigger downer while trying to masturbate then someone looking at you and saying “I got the drip last year, now I always use condoms.” In fact, I’ve always considered masturbation a private matter, not something that should be shared to raise money. If getting people to be safer at sex practices was the idea I guess there is no safer method than masturbation though.
That point can be argued of course considering there were four rooms available for the deed- a comfort room, a mixed room, a women’s only room, and a men’s only room; and the longer you masturbated and the more orgasms you had the more money you raised. With all that encouragement going on I sure hope people stopped to wash their hands and clean their spot before moving onto another room or a more comfortable spot (with a better view perhaps).
There were even rules to abide by at this event (at least it was taken seriously). In order to attend you were required to be at least 18 years of age (which is probably why Michael Jackson and catholic priests weren’t present). Touching of other participants was not permitted (again, sorry Michael) and faking orgasms was prohibited. You were however allowed to bring any aids you needed in order to help the process along (lets just hope there was no sharing going on).
It has been said that these events have happened in San Francisco for a few years and they have compiled over 25,000 dollars for charity. I am still wondering why I have never heard of this event happening. Maybe it’s because I live on the east coast or maybe it’s just because I don’t know anyone willing to masturbate in public.
Overall, I can’t think of a better reason to have an orgasm, but having a public jerk session still seems a little perverted and voyeuristic to me none the less. I think a community outreach program can’t possibly get fewer participants and at least you wouldn’t have to worry about sitting in someone’s donation juice!
