Lips need moisture year round. Protect lips from sun, wind, cold, and from heat while keeping the kissable soft. If your lips tend to dry easily and even peel, consider using a lip balm.
Not all lip balms are made equal. Some lip balms simply coat the lips with a waxy substance. Those lip balms never actually penetrate the delicate skin on the tips, and they easily rub off before they have provided any health benefit.
Lip balms are not just for women, and are not cosmetic purposes. While moist lips do look better than dry and cracked lips, moist lips are also more comfortable than dry lips. Dry lips can cause skin to crack, harden, peel, and sometimes bleed.
To combat dry lips year round, and protect them with SPF, use a lip balm.
Here is a health product comparison of various lip balms.
Health Product Comparison: Lip Balms
Most Effective Lip Balm: Un-Petroleum
Un-Petroleum is by far the most effective lip balm. Un-Petroleum keeps lips moist enough so they will not get dried out and peel. Un-Petroleum is just as effective in cold, bitter temperatures as it is under a hot sub-tropical sun.
Un-Petroleum is made by Avalon Natural Products. This lip balm is made with natural plant ingredients. Avalon adds SPF protection and Vitamin E, which is good for the skin. Avalon does not add petroleum (obviously), or preservatives. This lip balm is also Un-petroleum comes in vanilla, cherry and tangerine flavors.
Second Most Effective Lip Balm: The Body Shop Vitamin E Lip Care Stick
The Body Shop Vitamin E Lip Care Stick, like all health and beauty care products from The Body Shop is top shelf. This lip balm contains beeswax, Vitamin E, with SPF15.
Third Most Effective Lip Balm: Chap Stick All Natural
If you are turned off by memories of funny tasting Chap Stick, on your lips, or someone else’s, give Chap Stick another try. Their All Natural chap stick is made with rich shea and mango butters, jojoba and Vitam E. Ti’s all natural.
Tastiest Lip Balm: Back2Basics Nature’s Lip Care
Back2Basics Nature’s Lip Care comes in a four-pack. Flavors include ylang-ylang, green tea, and lavender. Back2Basics lip balms is another lip care product with beeswax. It is also very effective for keeping lips moist.
Most Tingly Lip Balm: Burt’s Bees
Burt’s Bees Lip Tints paint lips a neutral color and a tingling sensation can be felt on the lips. It is moderately effective on dry lips.
Most Worthless Lip Balm: Blistex Spa Effects
Blistex Spa Effects lip balms look promising. Their marketing and product naming were spot on. Select from “Uplifting” which blends Grapefruit, rosemary and eucalyptus. Another flavor is named “Renewing” with cucumber and melon. A third flavor is named “Relaxing,” with vanilla and plum.
The Blistex Spa Effects lip balm goes on too slickly, and does not seem to “catch” on the lips like the effective lip balms do. Due to it slick nature, it needs to be continuously re-applied.
