Do you have problems with mud being tracked into your house? Is the front of your house just plain boring? Or are you just tired of the way the front of your house looks? Making a new pathway or walkway may solve all of these problems and more.
A nice walkway into your house is always a welcomed addition to your home. It makes your home look more inviting to your guests.
The first thing you need to do is decide what type of walkway you want. There are many different choices you can make. You can use stepping stones, bricks, other colorful stones or even concrete.
What are the advantages of your choices? Concrete may be the most expensive choice, especially if you have to hire a professional company to pour it for you. Yet, it may last the longest. Stepping stones, bricks and the like are more colorful and it can give your walkway a more unique look to it. But if they become loose, they can cause one to trip and fall. If you choose this route, be sure to always take care of any loose stones immediately.
Concrete walkways are not as boring as they once was. Many contractors and even the weekend repairman can lay concrete that has more patterns to it. Some people are even adding tints and stains to the concrete to keep it from looking just plain gray. The look comes out looking really nice. Contractors also are using what is called stamped designs to their concrete. These stamped designs come in many different forms including a wood look, slate and stone. With special tools, people can even engrave their own designs and emblems into the concrete. The tools allow you to engrave right into the concrete itself, therefore as the concrete ages, the design doesn’t wear away because it is based within the concrete, not on top of it.
Stepping stones are nice because they are so versatile. They come in an array of designs, styles and even sizes. They are not hard to lay either. To begin, mark the area in which your walkway will lay with rope. Now begin laying the stones to decide their position along the walkway. You should allow about 18 inches or so from the center of one stone to the center of the next stone. Now take a shovel and outline where each stone is placed (along the edges of the stone). Remove the stones. Dig up the earth and sod of each outline where you intend to place a stone. Remember the stone should lay about an inch above ground. Pour about an inch sand into each hole and then level the sand. Replace each stone into position. Check the levelness of each stone, with an actual level. If the stone is level, replace some dirt around the edges of the stone to help keep it in place. If it isn’t you can also add more sand or remove some if needed. Sweep away any loose dirt. It is that easy.
You use the same technique to lay bricks as a walkway.
Once your walkway is completed, now the fun part can begin. You can add flowers or place some pretty walkway lights (solar ones that are so nice and easy to use) along it to make it look even more beautiful.
