Eventually most of us get married at some point or another. And we all have to deal with Mother-in-Laws. I recently just got married (November) and I have a wonderful mother-in-law. Some of us are blessed with wonderful Mother-In-Laws. Other are not quiet so lucky. Whether you have an amazing Mother-In-Law, like me, or a terrible one, here are some tips on some fun ways to bond with that special woman.
Shopping trips. What mom does not like going shopping? Whether male or female you can have fun shopping with your mother-in-law. Let her chose the places that you will shop. If nothing else but to talk about life and carry her bags around for her. This is a wonderful bonding time for new child and mother-in-law.
Lunch dates. Lunch is a great way to talk and get to know one another better. If your mother-in-law is less then friendly, this is a great way to be able to talk, but not have to spend all day with her. You can get to know her and keep it short if needed. If you are short on cash, offer to cook for her! Or you both can make the dinner together! That would be a real bonding experience.
If your mother-in-law is a real adventurer, take her camping! What a fun time! Camping under the stars (even if it is in your own back yard!) would be so much fun. Be sure to pack plenty of bug spray so that you are not up all night swatting the bed bugs!
Plan monthly trips together. If you are like me, your mother-in-law lives quiet a ways away. A good idea to bond is to make monthly trips. Whether you go shopping, go to the zoo, go watch a movie, whatever, plan a “mother-in-law day” where you just hang out and do whatever. This is a great way to set time aside for just the both of you to hang out and get to know one another better.
Since my mother-in-law lives so far from me, I do not always get to spend the time I would like with her. I enjoy randomly sending her card to let her know that I love her. So maybe sending a little note is not your thing… that is fine… that is why the internet and this wonderful thing called email was created. Drop her an email to let her know that you love her or that you are thinking about her… make her feel like the special woman she is!
I really do hope that you have or get a mother-in-law as great as mine. If you did, then any of the above ideas will be some fun things to do to get to know her better. If not it will take some work, but one day you can have a great relationship with your mother-in-law if you work at it. The key is to work at it and always let her know that you love her.
