Little girls love to dress up. It is almost magical to be able to spend an afternoon putting on fancy clothing and pretending to be a princess, movie star, or an elegant grown up woman. Creating a dress up chest for a girl is a great way to encourage her creativity and imagination.
The container for the dress up chest should be large enough to hold a lot of stuff. Of course, you can purchase an actual wooden chest and stain or paint it in your favorite color. However, that can be expensive. You can instead use a sturdy cardboard box and cover it with attractive wrapping or contact paper. They even have contact paper in wood grain style.
Alternatives to the usual dress up chest idea include large hampers, picnic style baskets, and even plastic tote boxes. If space is limited, it might be nice to make a pretty tote bag or duffle that can hold everything.
The Main Clothing Items
The main clothing items in the dress up chest can be found in your own closet or at the thrift stores. These should include knee length cocktail dresses, flowing skirts in fancy fabrics, shawls, vests, wraps, lacy camisoles and slips, and anything else that catches your eye.
Unless you are willing to sew some items, you should try to get the smallest size dresses that you can. This will ensure that your daughter can actually wear the item instead of having it simply fall off.
Long dresses, skirts, pants, and blouses are not great things to choose. You should try to pick out the most colorful, sparkly, lacy, or flamboyant fabrics that you can find.
Accessories are really the most important part of the dress up chest for your girl. These are the things that she will layer on top of the clothing to express her special creative style. At a thrift store, you can find a lot of pretty fashion scarves, hats with flowers, feathers, and ribbons, handbags, and jewelry. Piles of cheap beads and chains will be appreciated as will any clip on earrings that are not too tight.
Looking in other sections of the thrift store is a great idea as well. Lacy curtains can create fabulous wedding gowns and veils. Silk flowers can be a pretty bouquet or be stuck in her hair for a fancy look.
To provide many hours of fun and imaginative play, you should create a dress up chest for your little girl. Rather than stock it with kiddie costumes that limit her creativity, you should try to find things that are more true to life. Accessories are the key. Your little girl will love to dress up in all the clothing inside her dress up chest.
