Are you still waking up a few times a night to rock your baby back to sleep? Don’t you think its time you got some sleep your self and your child learned how to sleep on his own. If you don’t get much sleep your self it could make for a cranky mother or father during the day. This could make you not enjoy your child as much as you should. Your baby will also be cranky. There is nothing worse then a cranky mother and a cranky baby. I can tell you that wont be a pretty site and I feel sorry to the father who comes home to this.
Step 1- This is the most important step. Establish a night time routine. You must stick to this every night. I swear by routines for everything. They make everything go along as planned. A good night time routine is to give your baby a bath. They say bath water helps make them tired. If you baby is still on the bottle, after the bath give their last bottle. Then read them a story or what ever else it is you do at night time. Make sure nothing you do at the end of the day is very stimulating because you don’t want to take a wide eyed child to bed and expect them to go to sleep. If you child is not on a bottle yet, then give them a small snack. Try some crackers or fresh fruit.
Step 2- Does you baby have a favorite cuddle time toy? If not maybe introducing things to him will help. Find something that he can favorite. If they have a special thing that they use to feel safe then make sure they have this when they go to sleep. Some babies don’t sleep because they are scared. Having something they love next to him, besides mommy, may help that issue. You can use anything that they seem to like. Some babies use blankets and some have a stuffed animal.
Step 3- Don’t rock your baby to sleep every night and then slowly place them in their crib. You need to place baby in there while they are still awake. They have to learn to go to sleep them selves. If they don’t learn this, then they will wake you up in the middle of the night. If they have learned how to fall asleep by themselves they wont wake up scared and wondering how in the world they got here and where their mommies arms went. Once you start something with your baby, you will have to keep doing it. So if you pick your baby up and pace around the house while getting them to go to sleep, you can expect to do this every night. Don’t start doing anything unless you are prepared to do it every night.
Step 4- When you place your baby to bed and they start screaming, give them their comfort toy and tuck them in. Say good night and walk out of the room. If you don’t have a nightlight you may want to get one of them, so you know their not scared of the dark. Then leave the room. If they are still screaming go back in the room but do not pick them up. Tell them go to sleep and make sure they still have their comfort toy. You may have to do this a few times. Wait 5 minutes between each time. In time it will get better and you will not have to go in there 100 times before they fall asleep.
Step 5- If they wake up in the middle of the night, use the same routine you did to get him to sleep the first time. Do not pick them up. Make sure you stick to this routine. The one time you don’t, you will erase all your progress. It may take a week or two before they get the idea, but they will get it.
