A mini wishing well makes a great Valentine’s Day craft. While they can be used to store small things such as toothpicks, or serve as place card holders for a dinner party, they are also nice to look at all on their own. Using these simple steps, you will be able to make this Valentine’s Day craft that is suitable to be displayed in a country home.
The main things you will need for this craft are popsicle sticks, a baby food jar, and a hot glue gun. You can use other decorations such as flowers or paint, but these are all optional. To make the Valentine’s Day wishing well, you will need to make a clean cut across the popsicle sticks. Make sure that it is an adult using the craft knife to cut these pieces.
First, you will need to measure how long you should cut the popsicle sticks. Measure your baby food jar, and make the sticks extend about 1/2 inch beyond that measurement. If there are any rough edges after cutting them, file the edges gently. It is essential that the popsicle sticks be exactly the same length.
Before you glue them on, you should check to see whether you will need to make any adjustments. Place a rubber band around the baby food jar and slide the sticks under it so that the straight edge of the popsicle sticks are facing down. If they do not exactly cover around the jar, adjust them so that there is a tiny amount of space between each one. After they are perfect and you know how much of an adjustment you need to make between them, you are ready to start gluing them. Use your hot glue gun and glue the sticks to the jar. Remember, the rounded edge should be up and the straight edge level with the bottom of the jar.
After these have been glued on, you can begin making the top. You need to use 7or 8 popsicle sticks and find their exact midway point. Cut them along the middle. Take 5 or 6 of these halves and put them next to each other. Lay another so that it goes across these. It should touch each one, but not extend past the edge. If it needs to be trimmed, do so. Apply a small string of hot glue to the back and place it on the row of half sticks. Repeat these steps to make the other side. Then glue four full size sticks in the inside of the baby food jar, across from each other. These will hold the canopy over the top. Hold and glue one side of the canopy against two of the sticks so that they are attached at an angle. The flat edges of the sticks should point towards the middle of the jar. Make sure to glue the other side at a similar angle. Then, apply a small string of glue on the underside of the canopy, while holding it together.
If you wish to use these as place card holders for a special Valentine’s Day dinner party, you can attach a panel to the canopy or well. Use laminating film and insert your card before cutting the film slightly larger than the card. Press it gently against the well and smooth out the edges. This will let people know where to sit, and they can be removed later if you wish.
Make sure to customize this according to your wishes. While it looks best in a home decorated with country style decor, it’s the sort that can be decorated to fit with other themes. And regardless of the style, they are fun to make. Enjoy making and displaying this amusing Valentine’s Day themed craft.
