This retro wire fruit pin is perfect for adding some extra storage and design to a small retro kitchen. You can screw the vintage wire fruit bin into the wall and fill it with anything from fruit to snacks for the kids. Make three of these vintage wire wall bins for your kitchen and hang them vertically in your small space! The visual impact will be as great as the additional storage it provides.
To Make Your own Vintage Wire Fruit Bins You Will Need:
15 – 25 Wire hangers for Each bin
Wire Snips or Clippers
Hammered Metal Spray Paint (optional)
The first step of this somewhat simple vintage wire fruit bin craft project is to make three squares.
I made all 3 the same size. My three pieces measured 10 inches on each side for the square. You can make this any size that fits your kitchen though.
Start by opening up all of your wire hangers with your pliers. You might as well do this all at once and get it over with for the entire project. Untwist the engaging part of the anger first. Then bend the triangle shape open. Flatten all of the hangers as smoothly as you can.
Make your squares out of one hanger each. You can only make the squares as big as your hanger is. If you want to go larger you can attach two hangers together by twisting their ends around each other.
Cut or snip any excess wire hanger off with your clippers. I find that a small handsaw can cut these wire hangers as well, but clippers are easier. Carefully use your pliers to twist the ends of the square forms together.
Start applying the outside of your vintage inspired wire fruit basket.
I like to go ahead and measure how tall I am going to make the vintage wall fruit bin and pre cut my wire hanger pieces down to size.
Your three squares will be the horizontal spaces. Start by lopping you first wire hanger around part of one of the top square. At the opposite end of the hanger loop it around the bottom square. In the middle of the length of hanger attach the final square form.
Use floral wire to wrap around the square and the straight piece of hanger to attach them together. Work in one direction wrapping the floral wire around. Cut it off and form an X shape by wrapping it around in the opposite direction.
Work around the three squares repeating this process. I like to space my vertical straight wires about ever inch or so. You can do more or less though.
Now, you can leave the wire fruit bin with just these vertical lines are cut more wire hangers to weave in and out horizontally. If you do this you should space them the same distance apart as all of your other hanger wires.
Now, spray the entire vintage fruit bin with a hammered metal spray paint to give it a more rustic look.
Once this dries you can hang your vintage fruit bin on the wall in your retro kitchen. I like to use those great mirror clips or any hardware that allows you to wrap around the wire of the fruit bin and attach it to the wall.
You could also bend some more wire to make round hooks and attach them to the vintage looking fruit bin with more floral wire.
-If you are having trouble getting your hanger straight simply cut off the end where the hook was. This will eliminate a lot of wrinkles. You can also hammer the entire piece to give it a uniformly vintage weather look. Hammer the wire hanger pieces before you assemble them!
