Unless you were born into wealth, most people reach a point where they could use some fast cash sooner or later. If the amount is closer to $100 than $10,000 then this article may give you some much needed direction. First, how soon do you need the cash? Tomorrow? Next week? Within a month? Just how much can be raised depends on the time frame. Obviously, short of tapping your rich uncle, the amount that can be reasonably raised will grow if you have more time.
If you need it today, then your best shot is to find something that you own and can live without. It needs to be in good shape and be something that someone else will want. Clean it up. If you know someone who has admired it, swallow your pride and give them a call. Set a reasonable price, but don’t give it away. You may need to make several calls. If this fails, go to a pawn broker and get an offer. If you are offered what you’ve been asking, sell it.
If you are offered substantially less, lower your price to somewhere between the two prices and try to sell it to your contacts again. Tell them that you are going to sell it to a pawn broker if they don’t want it. Many times this will tip them over to buy because they want the item, and they know that you are making them a final offer. If no one bites, and you can live with the pawn broker’s offer, go back and sell it to him. Repeat this process until you’ve raised the cash you need.
If you have a few days, set up a yard or garage sale. Put out anything that you’ve been meaning to dispose of and anything that you’re willing to sell. Price it cheap or reasonably. This will raise you from $25 to $250. It may raise more if you’ve been collecting good stuff for a long time. Don’t be too quick to negotiate because many times they will buy it anyway before they leave. Near the end of the day, if you still need a little more cash, you can put out a 1/2 price sign to bring in some last minute business. Make sure you remove anything you don’t want to sell for 1/2 price before you post the sign.
If you have a week or so, you can post some things on Ebay and see what you can bring in from there. If you have old toys or records or collectibles, these can sometimes do quite well. You must be careful here to place your starting bid high enough not to take a beating or put in a reserve. Make sure you price your shipping high enough to cover your costs.
With a month or more, it will pay to investigate some business opportunities that can generate ongoing income. Online writing pays ok if you work hard at it. There are a number of pretty good sites. If you’re not destitute, you may want to ask those who are involved with home business opportunities to explain how they work, and how much help you can expect to receive from them as you start up. Some of these become very lucrative if you don’t mind pestering your friends and relatives to buy and join up.
You can also tap those around you for loans or gifts if you haven’t gone that route too often. If the need is for medicine or utilities or some other life need, there are benevolent agencies that set funds aside for such needs. If you belong to a church, often they can assist with one-time needs.
Finally, most people who need extra cash don’t like this option, but it is safe. Get a part-time job. It’s not fun. It will generate a steady cash flow for you and may lead to other work opportunities. Many people have been able to launch whole new careers from a second job.
