Try something new this year and recycle your old paper into new. This would be a great project to teach your older kids. This will save on our pollution and it saves all them trees from being cut down. Its not as hard as it sounds either.
old blender or food processor
wire hanger/wood frame
food coloring (optional)
sink filled with 4 inches of water
#1- If using a wire hanger, shape it into a frame. Any size and shape you would like . Most find it easier to do a square or rectangle shape. Take your pantyhose and stretch it over the frame. Don’t let it snag or tare, or it will be useless.
#2- Tear up the paper into 2 inch squares. Place torn paper into blender and slowly add water until its mushy. Blend the mixture and slowly adding more water until you come out with a grey ball. You want the ball to be a little soft so you can mold it well. Once you know its how you like it, turn the blender back on and run for 2.5 minutes without shutting off. All the paper should not be visible at this point. If you want colored paper then add a few drops of food coloring and give it another quick mix.
#3- Add two tablespoons of your white glue to your sink water. Then dump everything that was in the blender into the sink. Using your hands mix up well. You need to make sure it is completely mixed up as that is the most important step. If it’s not mixed well then it wont cure well.
#4- Take your frame and place it on the bottom of the sink. Wait about 10 seconds and slowly lift. You need to count to 30 while lifting and the frame should not be all the way out of the mixture until you hit the number 30.
#5- Take your frames and place them flat outside right in view of the sun ball. You may need to wait a few hours after this. You will need it to be completely dry before you touch it again. Once dry gently pull the paper off your frame. Make sure you do it gently as it will stick slightly. If you pull gently then everything should come right up.
#6- Set your iron on the hottest setting it has. Then gently steam out your paper. This will make it flat and lose the wrinkles from the screen. Make sure you don’t burn the paper.
Take your frame back to the sink and start over to make a new piece. Keep doing this until all the paper is out of the sink. You will have water remaining in the sink.
