Don Imus Regrets “Nappy Headed Ho’s” Comment?
Once again a Don Imus is feeling the heat over a racist comment, and well, he is apologizing of course!
Last Wednesday on the nationally syndicated television news program on MSNBC, “Imus in the Morning”, Imus once again, managed to offend a whole race of people, as well as women in general. The mumbling talk show host was carrying on a conversation about the Rutgers women’s basketball team when he referred to them as “some nappy headed ho’s”. He went on to describe them as “…some rough girls from Rutgers, they got tattoos…”. He compared them to the Tennessee women’s team adding “The girls from Tennessee, they all looked cute.” As if this was not bad enough, the producer Bernard McGuirk chimed in with his description calling them a bunch of “jigaboos and wannabes’.
According to the PRNewswire, the American Association of Black Journalists are outraged by the comments.”The disrespectful comments by Don Imus were degrading to women,” said Gregory Lee, chairman of the NABJ Sports Task Force. Gregory Lee wants to what MSNBC is going to do about this being as they are aligning their reputation along side a character such as this Imus washup. So do I!
As a woman, and a ‘minority’ I am offended. Calling a woman a ‘ho’ is just disgusting. And to hear ‘jigaboos’ in 2007 is disgraceful. I am all for freedom of speech. But come on people! This is MSNBC a supposedly reputable new broadcasting station. I don’t feel this is the place for a “Shock Jock’ as Imus. Howard Stern moved over to Sirius…I think you should pack up too Mr. Imus, although I doubt you will have a following like your arch nemesis. I am sure there are a few woman haters and bigots that would follow you over there though.
If you are in defense of Imus’s statements, shame on you. I have read on a few forums, comments by people (mostly white men) stating things like ‘people are too sensitive’ and ‘some Americans are too thin skinned’, and ‘why do we always have to be politically correct?’. I am not one to keep my opinion to myself. However, name calling, and general bigotry is beneath me.
I personally won’t listen to an old man ranting, and putting down an awesome women’s basketball team, because they are not “cute”. The ‘political commentators’ I tune into listen to are more civilized, and won’t lower themselves to putting women down because they are strong women! I would never say ‘lets get him off the air’ because that is not America. But what I would say, is the Weather Channel has a better program on at that time of the morning! I won’t be watching MSNBC for a while.
