Know anyone about to have a baby boy or baby girl? This wreath is the perfect gift for the expectant mother. You can make this simple “It’s a Boy or It’s a Girl” Wreath for them!
Using simple materials like hangers, dryer cleaner bags, spray paint, and a little time you can create an inexpensive and unique expectant mother gift that will last for years.
If you do not have any dry cleaning bags you could substitute plastic wrap from the roll or even sandwich bags (the cheap kind that do not seal shut).
In the end you will end up with a clearish white colored “It’s a Girl” wreath that looks perfect with any embellishment you want to add on.
To Make This “It’s a Girl/ Boy” wreath Out of Recycle Dry Cleaner Bags You Will Need:
Dry Cleaner Bags (zip loc bags, plastic sandwich bags, or even garbage bags)
Hangers (the wire kind, one for each letter)
Pastel Spray Paint
The first step is to go ahead and unwind your metal hangers. I like to put on a pair of gloves and twist out the hanger part. Then open the metal hanger and pull it out flat as possible. Leave ether hook part in place.
Now, go ahead and form letter forms out of the wire hangers. You want to use one hanger for each letter of the “It’s a Boy/ Girl”
To simplify I recommend making the wreath say “G I R L” or “B O Y.” People will assume the “It’s a.”
You could also make the “It’s a” as a separate smaller wreathe and attach it to the top right corner of the “GIRL” or “BOY.”
Use floral wire to attach it at a slight angle.
Once you have each letter formed use floral wire to hook them together. To do this simple lay your wire wreath frame letters side by side on a table. Cut off a 24 inch piece of wire. Start wrapping it around the two points the “GIRL” or “BOY” letters touch. The sturdy floral wire will hold the wreath wire frame together.
Have the hook remain in place at the top of the middle letter. You can from the circle and then bend the hook so it is upright.
If you want to make a smaller “It’s a Girl” wreath out of this recycled craft material, then cut off a few inches from the non-hook end of your hanger. This will allow you to form a smaller letter.
Now, take you plastic dry cleaner bags. Start cutting them into small strips. I like strips of plastic that are about 2 inches wide and about 6 inches long. You can make them wider and longer if you wish. If you go much longer than 8 inches though, you will have a somewhat droopy Personal “GIRL” or “BOY”wreath.
You will need a lot of these strips of plastic, so get everyone involved!
Now, take one strip and tie it in a knot around the metal frame. Anywhere you want. Tie ties in half exactly so that you end up with two equal ends of plastic sticking out.
You want to have the ends sticking out towards the front of the “It’s a Girl” wreath.
Now, repeat this step over and over.
Each time turn the plastics strips so the knot is at the back and the strips are facing front.
Repeat this until you have a full “It’s a Girl” wreath.
You should use the original hook to hang the homemade “It’s a Girl” wreath.
Now, you can add some color.
One way is to spray paint the entire “It’s a Girl” wreath with a coat of pastel pink spray paint after you have attached all of the strips of plastic.
You could also use rolls of the colored plastic wrap to make you strips. Simply roll the plastic wrap out, cut the strips and tie them on as before.
Pink, Baby Blue, and colored plastic garbage bags also work well.
Finally, you could mist the entire assembled “It’s a Girl” wreath with a spray adhesive. Lightly sprinkle on fine glitter until you have it coated. Tap the “It’s a Girl” Wreath off in a garbage bag to save any glitter that did not stick.
