After taking the funniest picture of my nephew goofing off for the camera, I was inspired to create these fun family photo place mats. These simple Family photo place mats are a very easy craft project you can make out of those great old Family photos.
Each member of the family can make their own photo placemat and use it at suppertime.
I am always looking for fun new craft projects to make out of family photographs. I also have a few that were family photos my grandmother made years ago. This simple place mat craft allows you to use new or old Family photo to make craft without ruining them.
To Make This simple Family Photo Place Mat You Will Need:
1 Photo (Make a Place mat for each family member)
A trip to Kinko’s
Any other craft materials you choose
The first step is to take your Family photos to Kinko’s a have them blown up to place mat size. I find that 12 inches by 20 inches is a great size. This shape works great for horizontal shaped Family photos, but you can also easily make it with vertical Family photos.
Ok, so now that you have the basic shape of your Family photo dinner placemat you need to start decorating it. Now, so many of the vintage and new Family photos already look great how they are, but when blown up might need a little more decorating.
I like to use glittery paint pens to outline words or even images. Use paint pens in gold, silver, or almost any color to enhance the photo.
You could also run a bead of glue around words and images. Sprinkle on some glitter, and then knock off the excess.
You can also use the paint pens to write family member’s names on their own placemat.
To make some cohesive dinner placemats you should have all of your family photographs printed in black and white. Take some watercolor paint or even some acrylic paint that has been watered down. Paint on highlighted areas on the photo. For instance, you could lightly fill in the lips pink and leave the rest of the photo black and white.
You could also paint in the eye color or hair color on a photograph.
Now, once all of your paint and glitter had dried you need to laminate the family photo placemat. I do not own a laminating machine, but you can always take anything to Kinko’s to be laminated.
Now, you can have them laminate about one inch out around the photocopied Family photos.
Take your pinking sheers and cut a great looking decorative border on the Family photos placemat.
If you do not own pinking sheers then try buying some 3-inch wide ribbon. Cut it so you can outline your placemat with it. Simply run a bead of glue along one edge of the ribbon. Press the ribbon into place onto of the dinner placemat. Leave half of it hanging over the edge. Now, flip the entire thing over. Run another bead of glue along the edge and pres it down on the back.
This will keep your laminated plastic together longer!
