The warm weather is here, and you’re ready for outdoor activities, like riding your bike. But after it’s been sitting all winter, the tires may be a little flat, or the salt air may have rusted a few mechanical parts. Spring is the perfect time to get your family’s bicycles in shape for the season. But, it’s a hassle to try to get your bikes to a repair shop, especially if you have a car with a small trunk, or are a senior citizen who finds it difficult or impossible to load and transport a bike in the car. Visitors staying at campgrounds also enjoy the convenience of having a bicycle repair shop come to them.
Like many who retire, Gene Kelly wanted to stay active, so he spent a lot of time repairing bicycles in his winter home in Florida. Then, as you’ll recall, there was a very active hurricane season a few years ago. After learning their area had sustained a hit, he and his wife traveled from their summer home in Cape May Court House, New Jersey to check on their Florida home. The damage wasn’t too bad, so they boarded up the house and returned north. It wasn’t long before another hurricane hit, but this time the damage was too much to repair, so Cape May Court House became their new year-round home.
When a big box truck became available two years ago, Gene decided to convert it to an on-site mobile bicycle repair shop. Interestingly, the truck previously belonged to the Red Cross, and was used in New York during the 9-11 tragedy. Gene has retrofitted the truck to be a fully-equipped repair shop, complete with generator, every tool you could imagine, and even a wheel-straightening jig. If, for some reason, he has to take a bike to his main shop for repair, he won’t charge for pick-up and delivery!
On Site Mobile Bicycle Service specializes in balloon-tire bikes and less expensive bikes. Gene said some bike repair shops won’t repair bikes that cost under $100, because their labor rate makes repairs uneconomical. But, you’ll find Gene’s service is not only convenient, but his prices very reasonable! And, if you need a bike but don’t want to spend a lot of money, Gene also offers reconditioned bikes.
Gene enjoys seeing all members of the family have bicycles to ride. He also enjoys volunteering his time and tools for the Multiple Sclerocis Bike fundraisers sho run from Philadelphia to the shore. You’ll find him sitting at a designated spot along the bike route, ready to help those in need.
