The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament West Regional Final game will be held tonight, March 26, 2007 as Louisiana State University, (#3 Seed) will face the University of Connecticut, (#1 Seed) for their fourth consecutive trip to the Final Four. The game will be held at the SaveMart Center at Fresno State University at 8 pm Central Standard Time and broadcast on ESPN. The Tigers come into this game with a grudge. They last faced the UConn Huskies during regular season play in Baton Rouge, LA on February 11, 2007 and lost by one point, final score 72-71 with the game going to UConn. The game tonight will be the ultimate rematch filled with non-stop action and one thing on LSU’s mind…REVENGE and a trip to the Final Four!
The Tigers defeated Florida State (#10 See) by 55-43 this past Saturday night to advance to the Regional Final game against UConn. They previously defeated UNC and West Virginia in their quest to the Regional Final.
LSU will be looking for Sylvia Fowles, a Junior, and leading scorer in the NCAA Tournament to continue to lead her team to victory. Fowles has been a starter for the Tigers for the past two seasons and very successful in scoring when needed.
Another key player for LSU will be Guard, Quianna Chaney, also a Junior on the team. Chaney scored a career high of 22 points in the semi-final game against Florida State. She will be ready tonight for action and one to keep your eye on.
Both Fowles and Chaney were essential players in the Florida State game in both scoring and overcoming turnovers.
The LSU Women’s Basketball team began the tournament without their regular coach, Pokey Chatman, who resigned unexpectedly from the University on March 7, 2007 with the intentions of coaching the team through the championship tournament but then resigned immediately the following day. Chatman’s resignation came as a shock to everyone and was totally unexpected. Bob Starkey, former Assistant Coach has been named Acting Head Coach and has taken control of advancing the Lady Tigers to the Final Four.
Statistics are on UConn’s side. They lay claim to victory in the three previous match ups between the two teams. Can the Tigers prevail? They have a thing or two to prove tonight; that they are a championship team, they are better than UConn, they don’t need Chatman to bring home the trophy.
The winner of tonight’s Regional Final will represent the Fresno Region in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Final Four and advance to play in Cleveland Ohio next week.
