A man in Chester, South Carolina was arrested and charged with “two counts of distribution of a controlled substance, two counts of criminal conspiracy, operating a gambling establishment and two counts of child neglect.” Police originally arrested the man, Danny William Dove, 45, for hiding drugs and a gambling room in a secret part of his house in South Carolina. When police arrived at the man’s house on Tuesday, they found more than just drugs and illegal gambling. Authorities found the man’s wife and sons, 4 and 8, living in another concealed part of the house. For four years they lived amongst human waste, food scraps, rats, and maggots in their fridge and cabinets. The rooms were littered with used toilet paper, trash, and dirty clothing. They were discovered walking barefoot in the filthy rooms. The gambling room was kept tidy and neat. It was in almost perfect condition.
Police say there was no signs of physical abuse to his wife or two sons, but the emotional and psychological problems for the three may never end.
The woman and her two sons were taken into protective custody by the police as their case was taken to state officials in order to try Dove.
The woman once tried to flee with her boys three years ago when she stole Dove’s pickup truck. He was able to persuade her to return home. To keep her from running away again, it was common for Dove to slip her painkillers and cocaine. The boys were rarely let out of the house, but had to stay close to the home when they were able to go out. Because of the boys’ lack of schooling, they are generally afraid of other people. The older boy can only speak broken English. The younger one only speaks gibberish.
A neighbor told police and a local newspaper that he had seen the boys before. However, he knew that they were not going to school because no school buses stopped in front on their house on weekdays, nor did the mother or Dove drive the children to school in the morning.
When the neighbor confronted Dove, he told him that he and his wife were homeschooling the two boys. The neighbor said he held an Easter egg hunt for the children on the block in hoping the Doves’ two boys would join, but they never did.
Brittney Dove, Danny Dove’s 20 year old daughter, and his mother believe that he doesn’t deserve to be in jail. Both insist it was his wife’s fault for their neglect and drug addiction.
Currently, Dove is in jail without bond. He could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted of all charges.
