McDonald’s has been known for years to come up with new additions to their menu. Many times these are seasonal, and usually they are ahead of the curve. This time though, it appears McDonald’s has decided “if you can’t beat them, join them” with their new offerings. As has been reported in numerous press releases and newspapers recently the restaurant chain is going to expand it’s beverage menu with the new offerings. McDonald’s is contemplating adding smoothies and iced coffees to their menu in the near future.
There has not been a lot of details given about what flavor iced coffees and smoothies will be offered, but the news about the possible additions started to be leaked in news papers at the beginning of March. Flavored coffees and smoothies have been strong income generators for other breakfast chain restaurants such as Starbucks and Dunkin Donus for quite some time now. You have to wonder if McDonald’s is jumping onto the bandwagon a little too late and maybe catching the end of the trend, or do they see enough demand in the market to justify their late entrance?
McDonald’s made a similar decision this past summer. At that time they decided to start serving their “premium coffee” in all their locations. The customer response has been positive enough that this may have encouraged them to introduce their new beverages. Coffee has always been viewed as a traditional breakfast beverage, but it appears other retailers are able to sell their iced coffee beverages throughout the day which would lead you to believe that McDonald’s will have success with their latest offering. It should also be beneficial that winter is over, and as warmer weather arrives customers will be looking for chilled beverages again.
It will be interesting to see how McDonald’s does with their smoothie offerings. Their milkshakes are one of the item menus that they usually change seasonally to offer a “featured milkshake”. Customers will have to wait and see if this will continue or if McDonald’s will let their milkshakes fade into the background as a staple beverage and feature their smoothies as their featured specials? This is just speculation but I am thinking that McDonald’s will be marketing their smoothies as being “more health conscious” than milkshakes.
Prior to the coffee release of the past summer, McDonald’s usually changed their food options to spark new interest in their menus. Some of the different items that have been offered in past years were the McRib, the McDlt, a Cheddar Cheese Melt, and the ill-fated McPizza. Of course though the restaurant will not be abandoning the idea of adding new food items to their menu. Their recent press release hints at the possibility of a large version of miniature cinnamon rolls that are currently on the menu coming to their U.S. locations in the very near future.
